Fans of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ have started to speculate that in the upcoming Netflix’s live-action series, Katara will reportedly be shown as the older sibling. As per a recent report, Albert Kim has landed the role of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' showrunner. But at the same time, there will be certain changes from the original story. As per the reports, Aang will be 12 years old only, whereas Sokko and Katara will be 14 and 16 years old respectively. Even though this is not confirmed, several fans of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ have taken to Twitter to show their disdain.

Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ has remained under scrutiny by fans for several reasons. Even though it was announced that the forthcoming series would have a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast, fans were pessimistic about the casting. Things again took a bad turn when the original creators Michael DeMartino and Bryan Konietzko, announced their departure from the show due to creative differences. ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ series is still in a very early stage, and many theories are circulating online. One of the most recent ones is about Katara and how she would be the one to play the role of the older sibling.

The original series is centered around the journey of 12-year-old Aang, the last survivor of the Air Nomads, and his friends Sokko, Katara, and later Toph as they go up and beyond to end the Fire Nation’s war against the other nations of the world. The original series also featured a sub-narrative of Zuko -- the exiled prince of the Fire Nation trying to restore his lost honor by capturing Aang.

Who is Katara?

In ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ and ‘Legend of Korra’, Katara is shown as a 14-year-old waterbender who has the ability to telekinetically control water and ice. At the beginning of the story, Katara is shown as the only waterbender in the Southern Water Tribe. Along with her older brother, Sokko, they find Aang and accompany him on his quest to defeat the Fire Nation. On several occasions, Katara is shown as a motherly figure to the rest of the gang -- an attribute she quickly inherited after several members from her tribe went to war.

Katara as older sibling?

As per The Illuminerdi, Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ series has found its new showrunner. As per the report, Kim, who is credited for writing 'Leverage', 'Sleepy Hollow', and 'Nikita' would serve as the showrunner. The report further alleged that even though in the animated ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, Sokko is Katara’s older brother, the live-action will change this up with Katara now becoming the older sibling. The switch is most likely to affect the characters and their dynamics.

Following the report, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ fans took to Twitter. One user wrote: "Yall really missed the point of Katara's character the fact that she was the younger sibling that was forced to be mature and take her mother's place had impact bc she was supposed to be younger and more carefree." Another tweeted: "no because sokka’s role as Big Brother not just to katara, but to the whole gaang is literally instrumental to his character and erasing that completely ruins everything about his personality and his character arc throughout the show, as well as the entire group dynamic". While a third fan resonated similar thoughts: "the age change messes up a huge part of katara’s development too… like it’s made a point that she had to grow up too early despite being the younger sibling as a result of being a young girl in a warzone her journey with team avatar is what teaches her how to be a kid again". Another fan seemed to be thrilled that Kim landed the job, "Albert Kim? is an Asian person gonna be in charge of live-action ATLA". Another wrote: "THE SHOWRUNNER FOR THE LIVE ACTION ATLA, ALBERT KIM, IS ASIAN THEY GOT AN ASIAN SHOWRUNNER".
