A Kansas police officer has resigned after it came to light that he wrote a message that read "f**king pig" on a McDonald's coffee cup and initially blamed one of the employees of the outlet of doing so. The image of the cup with the message went viral and elicited much outrage.

Now it has come to light that the message was not written by any employee at the Junction City outlet but was written by the unnamed 23-year-old former officer as a joke.

The cup with its unpleasant message made headlines when Herington Police chief Brian Hornaday shared the image on Saturday, December 28, on social media. The post left the public outraged, with many calling for the McDonald's employee involved to be fired. However, the fast-food chain branch shared on Monday that they had thoroughly reviewed the security video "from every angle, which clearly shows the words were not written by one of our employees."

After it was ascertained that the officer was involved in the stunt, Hornaday shared, "This was completely and solely fabricated by a Herington police officer no longer employed with the agency. The investigation that I conducted showed that this was meant to be a joke. However, we can see that how something so serious can get so out of control very, very quickly."

"The most important thing that could have been done and should have been done in this scenario would be to come forward immediately ... however, unfortunately, that was not done," he continued.

The cop, a former military police officer, had been with the department for two months, and is not expected to face any criminal charges.

In a Facebook post, Hornaday had previously shared, "This is what he paid for. Although I understand this is likely the act of one person and not a representation of the company when it was brought to their attention the company offered him a "free lunch". No thank you. A Big Mac and large fries doesn't make up for it. The US Veteran who continues to serve deserves much more. This is not only bad for McDonald's but is also a black eye for Junction City."

The post has been removed.
