Jay-Z, Beyoncé weren't protesting by sitting during Super Bowl national anthem, were discussing Demi Lovato's act

After days of speculation and call outs from all corners, including the face of silent protest Colin Kaepernick himself, fans finally have an answer as to why the Carters chose to sit down during the national anthem at the Super Bowl. They were, apparently, working.

Speaking at Columbia University on February 4, Jay-Z was asked if the choice to remain seated during the anthem was meant to "convey a signal", but the rapper quickly shot down that assumption, saying "It actually wasn't. Sorry."

He claimed that he was actually analyzing Lovato's performance with Beyoncé. The rap mogul, whose agency Roc Nation is partnered with the NFL and now produces all of the Super Bowl's entertainment segments, said that since Beyoncé has "performed at the Super Bowl before, and I haven't", the couple was immersed in a discussion about what Lovato may have been experiencing prior to singing the anthem.

They paid close attention to the audio and all aspects of the performance as Lovato belted out her rendition of 'The Star Spangled Banner'. "We immediately jumped into artist mode," Jay-Z said. "I'm really just looking at the show. The mics start. Was it too low to start?"

Jay-Z also added that there was no need to silently protest. He believes that the diverse lineup Roc Nation brought to the NFL, which besides Lovato included Yolanda Adams, Shakira and JLo, was "making the biggest loudest protest of all".

JLo's performance garnered a lot of attention for its political message regarding the Trump administration's imprisonment of children as part of its immigration policies.

When asked about whether Blue Ivy was made to sit down in protest, Jay-Z laughed it off saying it would have been impossible to make an 8-year-old remain calm on camera.

After reports of the family remaining seated at the show surfaced, many pointed out that they have been seen at various sporting events and they always stand for the anthem.
