Jared Kushner, senior adviser to President Donald Trump, faced flak on Twitter on Monday, June 8, over words uttered at a White House round-table with law enforcement. The 39-year-old businessman-turned-official in the Trump administration praised law-enforcement officials for embracing reform and "coming together to fix" policing after hearing the "cries from the community". Several law-enforcement officials were invited to the event which took place at a time when the country is witnessing serious protests against police brutality and seeking defunding and disbanding of police departments. The call for a police-free US is soaring in the wake of the brutal death of George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police last month.

Trump himself is unhappy with the demand for defunding the police and has slammed the radical Left Democrats and the opposition, including presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, who he is likely to face in the November election. Biden’s campaign has tried its best to distance him from the ‘defund the police’ campaign. Trump was, however, impressed with Kushner, also his son-in-law, and called him "my star" at the round-table. The president also said at the round-table that he didn’t endorse the idea of defunding or dismantling police departments and claimed "99 per cent" of law enforcement officers are "great people".

"We want to make sure we don’t have any bad actors in there, and sometimes, you'll see some horrible things like we witnessed recently, but 99 – I say 99.9, but let’s go with 99 per cent of them are great, great people, and they’ve done jobs that are record setting – record setting," Trump said.

Kushner said, "The law enforcement community heard the cries from the community, saw the injustices in the system that needed to be fixed and they responded by coming together to fix it. Hopefully at this time where there’s a lot of people in the country who are feeling different pain and feeling different concerns, law enforcement can be a leader in coming together and helping us work towards bringing solutions that could bring this country forward."

The president has given Kushner and his daughter Ivanka Trump, also a senior adviser, much power in his inner circle and Kushner has played key roles in the administration's efforts on issues like the Middle East peace plan, criminal justice reform and the response to Covid-19 pandemic. However, with no prior experience in administration, policy-making or foreign affairs before he landed in Trump's 2016 presidential campaign has earned Kushner wide criticism. Allegations of nepotism have also surfaced. Recently, Attorney General William Barr, who was also present at the round-table, said in a TV interview that he doesn’t believe there is systematic racism in the country’s law-enforcement system.

Kushner slammed on Twitter

Kushner was slammed on Twitter for his take at the round-table. One user named Raymond Baker from Iowa called Kushner "inept son-in-law" in a tweet and said, "The inept son-in-law declares systemic racism, abuse, and corruption within the law enforcement system now 'fixed'. Someone needs to show #JaredKushner the inside of a jail cell, and soon." One user named Velvet Meow said: "OMFG. This unqualified, nepotism installed, security risk is opening his mouth to spew more absurd bulls**t & easily disproved lies. #JaredKushner your gaslighting will not work! We don't need you to try to dispute the police violence we've witnessed & experienced!" One user named Zaire, a Nigerian-American, mocked Kushner saying, "Lol... So Jared is now the reform Czar? He is now the guy who will fix police brutality? Has #JaredKushner ever made things better?" Another user said, "Kushner is perhaps the ONLY person in the trump admin who is even MORE inept than trump himself."
