James Caan death: ‘The Godfather’ stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro join celebs in paying tribute

Oscar-nominated Hollywood legend James Caan, who was best known for the portrayal of Sonny Corleone in Francis Ford Coppola’s ‘The Godfather’, died on Wednesday, July 6. He was 82. The unfortunate news of his demise was shared via his official Twitter page. His family did not disclose the cause of his death.
 
Apart from ‘The Godfather’, the iconic star also made a name for himself with movies like ‘The Godfather II,’ ‘Misery’ and ‘Elf’. The Golden Globe-nominated star also enjoyed his fame with significant roles in movies such as ‘Thief’, ‘A Bridge Too Far’, ‘The Gambler’ and ‘Dogville’. Reacting to Caan’s death, several top celebrities rushed to social media to pay their final condolences including his ‘The Godfather’ co-stars Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. Adam Sandler, actor and filmmaker James Gunn, actress Kathy Bates and others said their final goodbyes to Caan on social media.

Announcing the demise of James Caan, his family on Twitter wrote, “It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.
 
James Caan was born in 1940 to Jewish immigrants in the Bronx. His father was a butcher. Caan played football at Michigan State and he later began studying acting as a student at Hofstra University. ‘The Godfather’ director Francis Ford Coppola was one of his classmates.



 

Celebrities pay their final respects to James Caan

Al Pacino

Reacting to James Caan’s death, in a statement to Deadline, Al Pacino said, “Jimmy was my fictional brother and my lifelong friend,” Pacino, who starred opposite Caan in The Godfather franchise, said in a statement to Deadline. "It’s hard to believe that he won’t be in the world anymore because he was so alive and daring. A great actor, a brilliant director and my dear friend. I’m gonna miss him."

Robert De Niro

Robert De Niro too shared his tribute to Deadline saying, “I’m very, very sad to hear about Jimmy’s passing.”

Adam Sandler

Legendary comedian Adam Sandler took to Twitter to pay his final respects to James Caan. “James Caan. Loved him very much. Always wanted to be like him. So happy I got to know him”, said Sandler adding, “Never ever stopped laughing when I was around that man. His movies were best of the best. We all will miss him terribly. Thinking of his family and sending my love.”

Stephen King

Stephen King too took to Twitter saying, “Very sorry to hear about the passing of James Caan, who gave an Oscar-worthy performance as Paul Sheldon in Rob Reiner’s exceptional film version of MISERY.”

Christopher Miller

Filmmaker, writer, and producer Christopher Miller shared his condolences for James Caan on Twitter. “We were lucky enough to work with James Caan on Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs”, said Miller adding, “He brought a pathos and authenticity to the role of Tim Lockwood that held the film together. RIP to a legend.”



 



 



 

Gary Sinise

Actor, humanitarian, and musician  Gary Sinise on Twitter posted, “Very sad to hear the news that James Caan has died. Heartbroken for his family & his friends.” He added, “Wonderful to know him & call him a pal. Jimmy was so supportive of Gary Sinise Foundation & my work w/ our veterans. He will be missed. Thank you my friend. Rest In Peace. God bless you.”

Rob Reiner

Filmmaker Rob Reiner on the micro-blogging site stated, “So sorry to hear the news. I loved working with him. And the only Jew I knew who could calf rope with the best of them. Love to the family.”

Francis Ford Coppola

One of James Caan’s close friends and collaborators Francis Ford Coppola in a statement to Deadline asserted, “Jimmy was someone who stretched through my life longer and closer than any motion picture figure I’ve ever known,” Coppola, who directed all three Godfather films, added, “From those earlier times working together on The Rain People, and throughout all the milestones of my life, his films and the many great roles he played will never be forgotten. He will always be my old friend from Sunnyside, my collaborator and one of the funniest people I’ve ever known.”

James Gunn

James Gunn on Twitter shared, “Rest In Peace James Caan. There are so many movies of his I love, The Godfather films of course being at the very top, but here are a few more I adore (Thief in particular was a Gunn family classic – I had the poster on my wall in high school).”
