Is 'Andor' a 'Star Wars' prequel? Diego Luna show timeline revealed

The series is set five years before the events of 'Rogue One' where Cassian Andor was first introduced, making it a prequel

Diego Luna-starrer 'Andor' is the latest piece of 'Star Wars' content premiering in September in Disney+. Created by Tony Gilroy, the man behind 'Jason Bourne', the 12-episode series follows Rebellion spy Cassian Andor during the five years before the events of 'Rogue One'. The show is termed as a spy thriller, a rather genre from the franchise.

The official synopsis reads, "The Andor series will explore a new perspective from the Star Wars galaxy, focusing on Cassian Andor’s journey to discover the difference he can make. The series brings forward the tale of the burgeoning rebellion against the Empire and how people and planets became involved. It’s an era filled with danger, deception, and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero."

Is 'Andor' a prequel?

Cassian Andor was first introduced in 'Rogue One' (2016) as a Rebel captain and intelligence officer. He is instrumental in ensuring that the Rebellion acquired the Death Star plans in 'A New Hope'. Luna's character served as one of the pivotal members working alongside Jyn (Felicity Jones ) to steal the plans of the Empire's ultimate weapon. With the series, set five years before the events of the film, 'Andor' serves as a prequel series. A Vanity Fair report revealed that it is “a series that [will] explore Andor’s backstory, revealing what drew him into the galactic Rebellion and how he evolved from a self-serving nihilist into a selfless martyr.”

With the show already renewed for Season 2, the general idea is that it ties into the movie that sees him and Jyn sacrifice their lives on the mission. The movie by itself was a hit raking in $1 billion worldwide, making it the 20th-highest-grossing film of all time and the second-highest-grossing film of 2016. There's no doubt that the prequel will fare the same way considering 'Star Wars' has a pattern of introducing lesser-known characters and giving them strong arcs.

'Andor' premieres on September 21, 2022, on Disney+.
