MANHATTAN, NEW YORK: Democratic Gov Kathy Hochul won the election on Tuesday, November 8, and has created history by becoming the first female to be elected as the governor of New York. She defeated GOP challenger Rep Lee Zeldin with 55.77 percent of the votes. Zeldin declined to concede, saying there were still 1.4 million votes likely still to be counted particularly in Suffolk County on Long Island. "We hope that as these results come in that we'll be able to prevail," Zeldin said.

Hochul, during her victory speech at her Election Night watch party that took place in Chinatown, said, “Tonight, you made your voices heard loud and clear. And you made me the first woman ever elected governor in the state of New York. I’m not here to make history. I’m here to make a difference. Because of all of you. We will keep making progress. Breaking down barriers, breaking glass ceilings, helping New Yorkers achieve the greatness that it is capable of. And I will lead with strength and compassion. Not with fear and anger. And together we will put our values to work to lift up all and leave no one behind,” as reported by Amny

On the other hand, prior to the win, Zeldin planned to tackle crime if elected. However, he was tagged by Holchul as "dishonest" for "not having a conversation about real solutions," according to CNN. He then tweeted the front page of NY Post showing a homeless man, Carl Phanor, with 25 prior arrests who is accused of raping a jogger in West Village. He wrote, "This is the reality of life in Kathy Hochul’s New York. Vote like your life depends on it, because it does."

'Strong victory'

Celebrating the win, a netizen applauded Hochul by saying, "Congratulations Governor @KathyHochul on your historic victory!" while another wrote, "@GovKathyHochul congratulations on your monumental victory over Lee Zeldin for governor of New York. You ran a brilliant campaign and destroyed him in the debate. We love you, Kathy." One user added, "Congratulations to the first woman elected as governor of New York and #GunSense champion, @GovKathyHochul As a #NYC @MomsDemand volunteer, I was thrilled to be at your victory celebration tonight."

The praise continued with one saying, "Despite all the media hype, New York was never going to elect a Trumper like Lee Zeldin. Congratulations @KathyHochul on your strong victory!" On the other hand, an individual wrote, "The energy people had for this governors race was amazing, everyone who was anyone wanted @leezeldin. It shows the downturn of our state and the corruption that will follow, the crime that will ensue. #SaveOurState was a tagline because it is indeed in trouble." While another said, "Lee Zeldin ran a terrific campaign! He fought tooth and nail and the People in NY simply voted for crime and more misery! Deal with it."
