Who is Nick Bostic? 'Hero' Indiana man rescues 5 people including 4 children from house fire
An Indiana man, 25, is being hailed a hero as he saved four young children along with their 18-year-old sister from a house fire early Monday morning, July 11. He noticed their porch was covered in flames while he was driving by. Nick Bostic of Lafayette was driving to a gas station around 12.30 am on Monday when he noticed the Union Street house was on fire and stopped. "I saw the fire on the balcony so I slammed on the brakes, pulled in the driveway, and ran into the house from the back. I was hollering ‘Is there anybody in there?’" Bostic told Fox 59.
Bostic, who works at a pizza restaurant, noticed four people, ranging between one and 18, coming down the stairs after they were woken up by his screaming. When he asked if anyone else was left in the home, he was informed there was still a six-year-old. Bostic rushed back into the home only to be confronted with growing flames and thick black smoke. "The smoke just came out of nowhere. It was pitch black, pitch black. The heat was excruciating," Bostic said, according to Fox 59.

Despite being in a 'black lagoon' of smoke, the heroic young man went further in, grabbed the child, and ran upstairs to get away from the flames and the 'excruciating' heat. 'It started to get hard to see, because the smoke was getting bad. I don’t know how to explain it, but it was like I accepted I was going to probably die, right there, that night. But it was a weird calm. You just got to work as fast as you can,' he said. In order to get out of the house, Bostic had to break through a second-story window and jump with the child in his arms.
Bostic told that the first time he punched the window, nothing happened, but he managed to break through the second time. However, the blinds were tangled around the child's leg and he had to untangle it before blindly jumping out the window. He landed on his right side, with the child on his left, and suffered injuries to his back, arm, and ankle. The child suffered from minor injuries, according to police. The fire was the size of a campfire when Bostic arrived, but by the time emergency services arrived moments later, the whole house was up in flames.
Dramatic bodycam footage shows the moments directly after Bostic managed to get out of the house as he thrusted a screaming child into the arms of an officer before he sat down stunned on the sidewalk. Bostic can be heard yelling: "I need oxygen," as he heaved for air. "I thought my last bit of energy was right there, where I landed. But I guess I had a little bit of an extra, I don’t know, extra backup – like a backup for the backup – for one last push," he told. All five members of the family were uninjured. Bostic, 25, said he doesn't consider himself a hero and said he's just an ordinary person who did what he had to do. He was airlifted to the hospital, where he was put on a ventilator for smoke inhalation, cuts to his legs and arms and right hand, and a serious injury to his right arm, among other injuries.

“Nicholas Bostic’s heroic actions saved lives. His selflessness during this incident is inspiring, and he has impressed many with his courage, tenacity, and steadfast calmness in the face of such perilous danger,” the Lafayette Police Department said in a statement. The police, fire department, and Mayor Tony Roswarski are now honoring Bostic at the Aviators game on August 2. Proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to Bostic's GoFundMe. The fundraiser, which was set up by Bostic's cousin, has so far raised $2,260 of its $50,000 goal in three days, and it will help the hero pay his medical bills. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
