Spoilers for 'I May Destroy You' Episode 2 'Someone is Lying'

The season premiere aka Episode 1 of Michaela Coel's dark HBO comedy 'I May Destroy You' points some serious fingers at protagonist Arabella's (Coel) friend Simon (Aml Ameen) when she gets assaulted. His apparent interest in what Arabella is like in bed soon turns into coy dismissal from his end in Episode 2 when she shows up at his home to inquire about what really happened the night before as she is still under total blackout. The only other person with a similar story like hers is Alissa — the girl Simon has secretly been cheating on his wife Kat with. Both Arabella and Alissa had been out with Simon the same night either of them has no recollection of. But when Arabella points out the same, Alissa pretty much berates the life out of her. Is Simon lying? Or is Alissa?

From the moment Arabella reaches out to Simon to ask about the last time they saw each other, something is off about him. He dodges and fumbles through the answer, somewhat alluding they were together until he walked her to her publisher's office to meet a tight deadline. Later, when Arabella finds out she made ATM transactions from a part of town over 40 minutes from where Simon claims he dropped her, she shows up at his home unannounced to confront him about it. A fumbling Simon keeps fumbling around Kat because he can't tell her that he spent the night with Alissa. So Arabella asks him to show his Uber receipts and gets Alissa's address from there.

Simon's story never adds up though and leaves Kat, along with us viewers, a little suspicious. He says they took an Uber to Arabella's publishers, but also he walked her till there, and then went back to someplace that definitely wasn't home. When Arabella hunts down Alissa and shows up at her door, she learns that Alissa too has no recollection from the night before. She says her friends think she was spiked but is too nonchalant about it. Things take an even worse turn when Arabella points out that Simon is their only common link in these uncertain details and Alissa begins yelling at her for even suggesting Simon could rape either of them. She gets defensive and brags about how long they've been seeing each other before yelling out that Simon is too much of a 'p**sy' to actually even dare do something like that.

Arabella takes an Uber and leaves the building, but Alissa continues yelling behind her, getting louder and more intense as Arabella walks away, only further striking us with why she got so defensive. Does she have dirt on Simon that could put his alibi in jeopardy? Is he lying? And thus, by extension, Alissa is lying too? Simon hasn't exactly seemed the squeakiest clean with his intentions, especially after telling Kat that Alissa was just a random woman he had met online and then pretended to be completely uninterested when Kat had decided they go for a throuple date cause she believed opening their marriage could fix it. Dignity and integrity clearly aren't Simon's biggest strengths, so at the end of Episode 2, when Kat finally shows up at Alissa's house, she doesn't need words to hint at the incoming crusade against them. It's the kind of scene that will make you want Kat to drag the hell out of Alissa.

'I May Destroy You' airs on Sundays at 10.30 pm on HBO in the US, and on Mondays and Tuesdays at 10.45 pm in the UK on BBC One.
