Houston councilman Greg Travis 'not sorry' for unflattering Michelle Obama meme, says he 'likes' Black women

While Travis has taken down the meme in question — which he claimed he retweeted with the caption, "Yep, just saying" after finding it on the internet, he said he did not regret his action

Houston City Councilman Greg Travis has refused to apologize, sparking outrage after he posted a meme that pitted an unflattering picture of former First Lady Michelle Obama with a perfectly poised snap of the current FLOTUS Melania Trump, both dressed in similar outfits.

While Travis has taken down the meme in question — which he claimed he retweeted with the caption, "Yep, just saying," after finding it on the internet, he said he did not regret his action. In the meme, both women are wearing pantsuits with Michelle seated without her legs crossed while Melania has her legs crossed.

"I think it just shows a contrast and that's what the meme has done, it's meant to exaggerate it," he told ABC13 after screenshots of his Facebook post went viral on Twitter and Black Lives Matter Houston called for his resignation. "Those who love Michelle Obama aren't going to like it, those who love Melania Trump probably are," he said

Ashton P Woods of Black Lives Matter Houston was the first to tweet screenshots of the meme that the councilman posted along with the caption, "@TravisDistrictG Houston City Councilman Greg Travis hates Black women. Here's Greg's email & email of Mayor Turner: districtg@houstontx.gov mayor@houstontx.gov DEMAND HIS RESIGNATION."

Woods also shared one of the replies posted by Travis in which he also slammed Vice President-elect Kamala Harris and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. "It's called Affirmative Action. Doesn't take much—she was born with her qualification. She isn't the brightest bulb in the lot," Travis wrote.

"And let's not talk about Kamala—her qualification is that she sleeps with powerful men. And don't bring up Hillary. Please, she would be nothing without Bill and she had to cover up for him raping those five women. Feminism is dead on the left. These three helped to kill it," he added.

Soon, people flocked to the comments section to bash Travis. "And these are our councilmen, ladies and gentlemen, I don’t know how they win but they do, cheating in Texas???? Investigate, I didn’t even know who this fool was until now and I live here," one said while another one wrote, "Wow. A public representative posting a meme about First Ladies. Not cool. Really low class." One more commented, "He needs to apologize and resign like a real man would. The bar is so low right now."

Another remarked, "This post is a slap to all women! Why doesn’t he use a photo comparing Trump to any other president? And he does know Melania posed nude correct? Unacceptable. His racism and sexism are showing." The next quipped, "I’ve emailed District G and the Mayor’s office requesting Travis’ resignation. I’ve also signed a petition requesting his resignation. I’ve encouraged my family and friends to do the same. Please tell me how else I can help. He must go!"

In another interview with Click2Houston, Travis made it clear that he had no intention of resigning over one post. “I have every right to my opinion. They have every right to their opinion. I don’t tell other people they can’t have their opinion,” he added.

“They can call for whatever they want. I’m not resigning.” When he was pressed to explain why he thought one woman was "classier" over the other, he said, "Well, I just think that one represents the First Lady ideal. Michelle Obama has always been too political for me."

He also denied being racist, nor misogynist and maintained that his comment was directed toward his thoughts on the former FLOTUS' performance in the unelected position.

“Everybody can have an opinion. What makes me have a right to an opinion is that I’m an individual. I’m a person and every person has a right to their opinion. I have a right to have opinions about men and women.  I have a right to have opinions about everything. This wasn’t directed at anybody except one person, Michelle Obama. I don’t hate Michelle Obama, I just don’t think she’s all that," he said.

He added: "I like women. I like Blacks. I like Black women. One of my favorite people is Candace Owens. I actually gave money to her organization. If I didn’t like Black women, I probably wouldn’t be supporting her. What’s trying to be done to me is to cancel me out. It’s not going to work. When people do that I just fight even harder."
