Hoops' Jake Johnson suggests fans 'change the channel' as he warns comedy comes with 'plenty of d**k jokes'

Despite the show being set in Kentucky, Johnson's character, Coach Ben Hopkins, doesn't talk in a Southern accent. Anomalies aside, the show also has a lot of swearing and dick jokes

In a new tell-all episode of the podcast 'Thirst Aid Kit', 'New Girl' star Jake Johnson has opened up more than just the neverending allure of his onscreen persona, Nick Miller. Addressing almost every ground from being asked to play the fat guy, jokes on who were decadently written about on the show, Johnson also shared the little deets about his upcoming adult comedy 'Hoops' on Netflix. And mind you, it's not a show for everyone, he warns.

“If somebody starts watching this show, and a minute in they don’t like it, they don’t like the swears, they don’t think it's funny, then I ask that person to just change the channel," Johnson gets very upfront about sharing the essence of the show, explaining "Because it’s not going to get better, it’s not going to come around and you’re gonna say ‘episode three just really earned my viewership.’” As for the never-ending follow up of sensitive moments with dick jokes, "We undercut that, there are moments of sweetness, but everything is then cut with a dick joke. Once you’re there and we’re getting sweet, then you’ll go shouldn’t somebody do something crass? And they will!'"

Despite the show being set in Kentucky, Johnson's character, Coach Ben Hopkins, doesn't talk in a Southern accent. Which is surprising cause some of the characters do. "Ben’s (the show’s creator) a Kentucky boy, so we’re not going after the South on it, we’re not making fun of Kentucky," Johnson shares in the podcast, adding: "The reason I don’t have an accent and Natasha does is she can do an accent and I can’t. The reason Rob Riggle doesn’t is no one wants to hear Riggle with a Southern accent. It was really dealer's choice...When people showed up we’d ask ‘can you do an accent?’”

For the longest time, Johnson was the cute guy from 'New Girl', who as he now recalls, had been asked to drop some 15 pounds, and even after that, "chubby" jokes were written into the show. “No part of me was offended the way one might be offended by that...I almost started crying because I wouldn’t be able to eat the [celebratory] meal I was so excited for..." Johnson explains. "But, once I was in the show and it got established, they can’t fire me for being chubby. They made a bunch of jokes, once Liz made a joke about it and Max Greenfield hit the joke and everybody laughed. I think everybody at the network could exhale and say, Nick Miller he could be the chubby guy. As soon as that joke happened, I got my two sides, I got my margaritas, I was back to eating the way I should eat.”

'Hoops' premieres Friday, August 21, only on Netflix.
