A heroic schoolgirl is fighting for her life after she intervened to save her baby nephew from a group of machete-wielding thugs who broke into their home.

The incident unfolded after the gang forced their way into the home on Transa Way in Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh, at around 9:15 pm on Saturday, November 16, according to the Irish Mirror.

The gang eventually stabbed the girl, who is just 13-years-old, as she tried to shield her 11-month-old nephew from their attack. Authorities and emergency services were called to the scene shortly after and rushed everyone involved to the hospital for treatment.

The infant was found to be unharmed thanks to his aunt's timely intervention, while the girl herself is said to be in a critical but stable condition because of the stab wounds she sustained to her back during the attack.

Elizabeth Joyce, a relative of the girl who was also injured in the attack, hailed the teen as a hero. "It is something that we will never get over," she said.

"The baby was unharmed because his aunty is a hero," she continued. "She's 13 years old and she threw her whole self over that baby, and she saved his life. She is a hero."

Police are investigating the attack as an attempt to murder, with Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Detective Sergeant Keith Monaghan stating that the incident was undoubtedly a terrifying one for all those involved.

"We are determined to find the men responsible," he said, adding that detectives were investigating several lines of inquiry.

"This attack in Lisnaskea, carried out by men carrying machetes, is to be condemned in the strongest possible terms," said Alliance Fermanagh representative Matthew Beaumont. He continued, "Whoever was responsible for this horrific attack must be caught quickly and face justice."

Anyone with information on the case has been advised to call 101 and give the reference number 1650 16/11/19. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, which is 100% anonymous.
