If there is any one reality TV couple that has stood the test of time, it would have to be Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, even if they did it in their own unique way. The couple has been inseparable (well, sort of) ever since they first met in 2017.

Despite all the odds and rumors around their marriage, Montag and Pratt found a way to make it work and now are back to where it all began, seeing that they're a part of Season 2 of 'The Hills: New Beginnings.' From eloping to becoming parents, here's a look at their relationship so far.

How did the couple meet?

For Montag, meeting Lauren Conrad at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where she enrolled to study fashion, turned her life around. The two met during freshman orientation and became fast friends and they both transferred to Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles, California.

When they met, Conrad was already a part of 'Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County,' the original show that led to Conrad's spinoff, 'The Hills.' The new series was to chronicle the lives of housemates Conrad and Montag and friends Audrina Patridge and Whitney Port. Montag brief dated Jordan Eubanks, but the relationship didn't last.

She soon found love in the arms of a then 22-year-old producer Spencer Pratt. They met at a nightclub while filming for the show. However, their relationship took a toll on her friendship with Conrad, seeing that she didn't approve of them dating.

Moreover, the couple seemed to have gotten the villain edit, with Conrad accusing the two of them of starting the rumor that she had a sex tape. The pair got engaged in 2007 but revealed that the engagement that played out on the show was not an engagement, it was Pratt giving Montag a promise ring.

The couple spoke to Cosmopolitan about what exactly happened. "We were talking MTV into doing our own "newlyweds get engaged and get married" mini-series special that would have been, like, six episodes, that would have aired while The Hills was on a break, in-between seasons," Pratt explained during the interview.

"They [Pratt refrained from taking name due to legal reasons] actually stole that when they heard that that was happening, so they kinda like jacked it from us and turned a promise ring scene into an engagement ring, and it kind of snowballed from there. Technically, that was a promise ring."

The pair later eloped in 2008, during a trip to Cabo San Lucas, in Mexico. After getting married in a courthouse on the show, they tied the knot yet again, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena, California.

Things were going seemingly well, until 2010 rolled in, proving to be a trying time in their relationship -- first, Montag fired Pratt as her manager and hired intuitive healer Aiden Chase instead. "After the incredible experiences I have had healing my life and truly connecting to my dreams with healer intuitive Aiden Chase, I have officially asked him to become my manager,” Montag said, while talking to PEOPLE. “Having an intuitive psychic leading my team gives me an edge no one else has.”

Soon after, Montag filed for legal separation, citing irreconcilable differences and even moved out of their home. After a few weeks, she even filed for divorce. 2010 got even messier when during the divorce proceedings, Pratt said that he was going to sell Montag's sex tape.

But in a strange turn of event, the two announced in December that they were going to try to make things work, after a long vacation in Costa Rica. The two even went on to renew their vows and later claimed that the divorce was fake.

They've appeared on multiple reality shows together

The couple is a package deal of sorts, seeing that they've starred on multiple reality TV shows together, such as 'I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here' in 2009, ' Marriage Boot Camp Reality Stars' in 2014 and 'Celebrity Big Brother' in 2013 and 2017, as reported by Insider

There have been talks about Baby No. 2

Despite the endless ups and down, the pair welcomed their first child, Gunner Stone in 2017. While both of them have expressed that they want more kids, they can't seem to agree upon the timing.

Pratt recently spoke to US Weekly about the same. "We were on such different pages,” Pratt explained "Heidi was willing to [get] pregnant during the pandemic. … And I was, like, hearing stories about dads having to wait outside of the building. They’d come in for, like, two minutes. Just the idea to me … I didn’t want to do that. It felt like a sci-fi movie."

However, it hasn't been easy, seeing that the couple claimed that they've been trying to conceive for five months. "I think that everything happens for a reason, and I’ve just kept it in prayer that the right time will happen," Montag explained. "It’s challenging because the first time we tried with Gunner, I got pregnant right away. Things change. It’s intense."
