‘Welcome to Wrexham’: Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney scores rare renewal ahead of Season 5
In a rare and almost unprecedented series of events, the soccer docuseries 'Welcome to Wrexham' has been renewed by FX for three more seasons. The exciting news appeared shortly before the upcoming Season 5 premiere, scheduled for May 14. 'Welcome to Wrexham' comes from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, and the recent three-season renewal ensures that the docuseries is here to stay, now having an eight-season run that will end in 2029.
While announcing the three-season renewal, FX Entertainment's President Nick Grad noted in a statement, "When we launched Welcome to Wrexham, we never imagined the impact it would have on the club and the town while creating one of TV’s most successful and beloved docuseries. This three-season renewal is a testament to the vision of Rob and Ryan and the enduring connection they’ve built with fans around the world." Wrexham AFC is a Welsh soccer club that Reynolds and McElhenney bought a majority stake in back in 2020.
At the time of acquiring Wrexham AFC, the club was at the bottom rungs of the English football league pyramid, occupying just a fifth-tier position. Since then, the club has achieved three successive promotions, a rare feat. It now competes in the English Football League Championship, one tier below the top-tier Premier League. The upcoming Season 5 of 'Welcome to Wrexham' will chronicle the club's journey to occupy its rightful place in the Premier League. As of this writing, Wrexham sits in seventh place in the championship, that's one spot shy of a chance at the promotion playoffs, with five matches remaining in the ongoing season.
McElhenney and Reynolds also released a joint statement that read, "A three-season order for a TV series is nearly unheard of and is only possible through the ground-breaking work of our Emmy-winning documentary team and the relentless rise of Wrexham AFC and all those working so hard to make sports history. We are forever grateful to our equally fearless and tireless partners at FX for being with us every step of the way. We are so happy we get to keep telling the Wrexham story for years to come."
'Welcome to Wrexham' is produced by More Better Productions, 3 Arts Entertainment, Boardwalk Pictures, and Maximum Effort. Reynolds and McElhenney serve as executive producers, along with Bryan Rowland, Jeff Luini, Humphrey Ker, Nicholas Frenkel, John Drisko, and George Dewey. Andrew Fried, Dane Lillegard, Andy Thomas, and Sarina Roma from Boardwalk Pictures are also on board as executive producers. The upcoming fifth season of the docuseries will premiere with two episodes and continue airing new episodes every week on Hulu and FX.
