Many attendees walked out of the Halsey concert in Phoenix, Arizona on June 26 after the singer’s pro-choice speech. The 27-year-old singer, who goes by pronouns she/they, told the crowd that their heart breaks seeing people who “deserve the right to healthcare” and the “right to choose.” "Here in Arizona, you guys got to promise me that you're gonna do that work so that the person to the left of you and the right of you has that right for the rest of their lives," they said and gave a heads up, "If you don't like it, you can go home right now, I don't care."

Halsey condemned the decision of overturning Roe v Wade, which had originally guaranteed the federal right of women to get abortions. To project their views, the singer, who performed on the Ak-Chin Pavilion stage, initiated chants of "my body, my choice" during the concert. According to Fox News, several people left the venue when Halsey started chanting. But this didn't stop Halsey, who continued to urge fans to get politically active.

A fan recorded her speech and shared it on Twitter, where Halsey can be watched criticizing the Supreme Court's decision and saying, “The truth is that my heart breaks looking out into this audience because I see so many people who deserve to have incredible lives, who deserve the right to healthcare that they need, who deserve the right to choose themselves in a situation where there is a choice. I'm hoping every single one of you, and I don't want you to ever have to be in a situation where you don't have access to that."

Another fan criticized the individuals who left the concert by tweeting, "The amount of people who just walked out of the Halsey concert after a nightmare when she spoke about abortion was sickening. Fight for what is right." To which Halsey responded, "Downside of doing outdoor venues: no door to hit them on the way out."

Many came in support of Halsey. One user wrote, "my first concert ever in life & I chose you @halsey it was the absolute best first experience so powerful, almost lost my whole voice." Another said, "it’s insane to me how someone can go to a HALSEY concert and not expect her to express her political opinions and the things that she always speaks about in her music like ??? do you even know who are you paying to see or what."

Halsey 'honors' her audience

After witnessing such support, on the morning of June 28, Halsey tweeted, “Honored to have my audience. Proud they cultivate a space where emotion and action meet. Love doing what I do. And expect me to always tell the truth when I get up there. Show must go on.” She also had some choice words for the people who walked out, saying, “The 'people pay to see you sing not hear your views' argument is so dumb. No, you paid to see me use a stage as a form of expression in the manner that I choose. Sorry you lack the critical thinking to realize that the rhetorical power of music doesn’t always serve your escapism."
