'Grey's Anatomy' Season 17 Episode 1: Is Meredith going to die? Derek's return leaves fans emotional

Patrick Dempsey returning to 'Grey's Anatomy' sent fans into a meltdown

The premiere of 'Grey's Anatomy' has fans in tears. The doctors of Grey-Sloane memorial are struggling to save lives during the Covid-19 pandemic that crippled the world. People are dying, and there is chaos as most of them don't have access to healthcare. Tempers are on the edge, relationships are frayed, and the doctors are on the edge. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Andrew DeLuca try to pick up the pieces, while Owen Hunt (Kevin McKidd) and Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) break up, hopefully for good.

Owen found out about Teddy cheating on him, as her having sex with Tom Koracick (Greg Germann) echoed in the OR. Owen stood Teddy up at their wedding, and in the latest episode finally confronts her about it, after keeping her hanging for quite some time. He plays the voicemail back to her and says, 'So much for love...so much for friendship and so much for family'. Owen's right in breaking off with Teddy, but karma is truly evil, because it's pretty much what Owen had done to Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) back in the old days of GA. He had cheated on her to hurt Cristina, and after that, he cheated on Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone). But hey there's good news after all that heartbreak. Amelia's baby name was finally given....and they named him Derek Shepherd Lincoln, after her own brother (Patrick Dempsey), who died in Season 11, and something we can never get over. So, yay, something good for everybody.

Or not....because Meredith seems to suddenly collapse at the end of the episode, and in limbo, she sees....Derek, at a beach. We're not crying, you are. This leaves to shocked fans to ask, is Meredith dead? Is this it?  "What. The. Fuck. WHY IS DEREK THERE. IS MER DEAD WHAT THE FUCK #greysAnatomy," a fan tweeted. "I DID NOT JUST SEE DEREK SHEPHERD ON MY SCREEN- #GreysAnatomy," a fan wrote.

Fans are having a literal meltdown right now. "DEREK SHEPHERD OMG WTF I CANT STOP CRYING #GreysAnatomy," a fan tweeted. "I DIDNT GET TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED ALL I SAW WAS DEREK ON A BEACH WITH MEREDITH #GreysAnatomy," a fan wrote. "I’m losing my shit Grey’s Anatomy what the F I know I know y’all didn’t bring back Derek oh my god #greysAnatomy17 #GreysAnatomy," a fan tweeted. "OH MY GOD WHAT THE FUCK OH MY GOD OH MY GOD DEREK #GreysAnatomy," a fan tweeted.
