When will ‘Greenland 2’ release? Newly added HBO sci-fi is a streaming success ahead of 2026 sequel
Gerard Butler's 'Greenland 2: Migration' is one of the much-awaited action-packed disaster flicks in 2026. Released in 2020, the first installment starred Butler and Morena Baccarin. The film follows Butler's John Garrity and his estranged wife, Allison, searching for a safe place to hide from a comet hurtling towards Earth. The Garritys put their life on the line as they gamble on a last-minute flight to reach their destination.
Such was the success of the first film that Lionsgate confirmed the second installment for a 2026 release. At the time of writing, 'Greeland' has been a streaming hit with a spike in viewership this holiday season. Per Variety, "In the aftermath of a comet strike that decimated most of the earth, the film follows the Garrity family, played by Gerard Butler, Morena Baccarin, and Roman Griffith Davis, as they’re forced to leave the safety of their bunker in Greenland to traverse a shattered world in search of a new home."
Directed by Ric Roman Waugh on a script penned by Mitchell LaFortune and Chris Sparling, the new film also stars Amber Rose Revah, Sophie Thompson, Trond Fausa Aurvåg, and William Abadie. Butler and Waugh serve as producers alongside Basil Iwanyk, Erica Lee, Alan Siegel, Sébastien Raybaud, John Zois, and Brendon Boyea.
Earlier, Baccarin spoke of her experience while filming the sequel. "I think that the film has really wonderful things going for it, the story of this family that really is trying to survive, and I think that that really works, and I think that's why it got a sequel," she told Collider. "I am very curious to see it myself because I feel like it was a blur of exhaustion and running and crying, and much like the first, really."
"It was the hardest shoot of my life," Baccarin added. "Not the easiest, not the most fun. A really difficult experience. We were outside a lot. We shot in London, and we shot in Iceland. It was physically draining, emotionally draining."
Director Waugh teased a bit more about the film. "It'll be about who survived, and how they rebuild the earth when everything was completely burned to the ground. So it's a beautiful kind of way to give you a conclusion of the Garritys and where they go. So, do you call it a sequel? Yeah, but to me, it's more of the final chapter of what this story has to say."
For fans wanting to catch 'Greenland' before the release of 'Greenland: Migration', the film is available to stream on Max. The movie is also available to rent or purchase on Prime Video. 'Greenland 2: Migration' releases January 9, 2026, in theatres.
