'Grantchester' Season 5 Episode 1 saw Reverend William Davenport (Tom Brittney) and Detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green) solve the case of the death of a female university student. In the upcoming episode, the duo will investigate an accident that Reverend William had witnessed himself. In the promo of the upcoming episode, we see William witness the accident. It also seems as if William will continue to give journalist Ellie Harding (Lauren Carse) more news scoops while trying to outwit her.

It is one such conversation that reveals that the upcoming episode's investigation would be about a murder case that has been concealed as a hit and run. Geordie and William are busy looking into the identity of the person who drove the car that was involved in the accident, however, every time there is a lead, they find themselves chasing after witnesses who continue to run away. This seems to frustrate Geordie more than anything.

While the case itself will take over the majority of the plot the next episode, we will also see William hear news from his mother that he is not ready to accept. It is time for William to hear from his mother that she is now going to be getting married again, to the man that she had begun dating recently. In the previous episode, she had told him about the man that she had met recently who had helped her move on from feeling melancholic about leading a life alone.

William had always found his mother's need to belong with a man problematic and he had also spoken about the same to her in an attempt to talk sense into her. He always tried to explain how his mother had the privilege to try and find something meaningful in life, but she didn't seem to understand his point in the past. It seems like she hasn't got the point in the present either. In fact, in the promo, she introduces her son to the man that she has been dating because the two have decided to get married.

From the main trailer of the show, we know William doesn't appreciate the man that his mother has begun dating. Then, there is also a scene of him trying to explain to his mother that the man that she has chosen to be in a relationship with is an abusive man. He also is shown trying hard to convince her to change her mind about this man, but his mother seems adamant and this is going to cause quite a few problems for William.

'Grantchester' Season 5 new episodes drop on Masterpiece PBS on Sundays at 9 pm ET.
