GOP counsel Stephen Castor goes viral after bringing a grocery bag instead of a briefcase to impeachment hearing

Republican counsel Stephen Castor brought a reusable grocery bag instead of a briefcase to the House Judiciary Committee's latest impeachment hearing on Monday. The GOP lawyer reportedly walked into the Longworth committee room carrying his legal documents in a Fresh Market grocery bag, drawing everyone's attention to it.

The bag, bright green in color, had the words 'live, eat, shop, reuse' written on its side and had images of bread on its front and back. The bag also caught the attention of netizens, with even Fresh Market tweeting about Castor using its bag.

"We'd like to announce that we are the official briefcase maker of Steve Castor," The Fresh Market tweeted. "You can fill your briefcase up with files or yummy food (our preference). Mention hashtag #TFMBriefcase over the next 24 hours to get your own briefcase for free (aka reusable bag!)"

CNN talking head Keith Boykin shared a clip of Castor walking in with the grocery bag and wrote: "Is Steve Castor really the best lawyer Republicans could find to defend Trump in the impeachment hearings?"

Another Twitter user, JD Durkin of Cheddar, crafted a mock dialogue exchange, writing: "'Hey you're bringing your briefcase today for your nationally televised impeachment hearing right?', 'No no I'll be fine with this,'" he wrote in Castor's voice.

White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway's husband, George Conway, also chimed in, tweeting that the bag was a "very liberal-looking amazon-wapo kinda bag." He mistook the Fresh Market bag for its competitor Whole Foods, owned by Amazon head Jeff Bezos. Conway added that he hoped the Capitol Hill building security screeners "checked it for tofu and kale."

Monday's impeachment hearing saw Castor and two Democratic staff lawyers outlining each side's case against and for President Donald Trump's impeachment.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi launched an impeachment inquiry in September after a whistleblower lodged a formal complaint, alleging that President Trump had sought favor from Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky during a June phone call, asking him to investigate his political rival, former vice president Joe Biden. The whistleblower also mentioned a possible quid pro quo involved as Trump held back the US military to Ukraine.
