Spoilers for ‘Good Trouble’ Season 3 Episode 3

Titled ‘Arraignment Day’, the second episode of the third season of 'Good Trouble', the spin-off from the American family drama television series 'The Fosters', saw Mariana (Cierra Ramirez) struggle with something completely unexpected. While Mariana’s Act-ivism app was being used to crowdfund enough money for Malika (Zuri Adele) to make bail -- the court increased her bail to $250,000, and in the event she was unable to pay, she’d be sent to a women’s prison -- the app faced a big problem.

White supremacists discovered the app and its Black Lives Matter ties and co-opted it. They began spreading their hate, harassing other users, and even managed to push down the crowdfunding post for Malika’s bail. At first, Mariana decided to ban offensive users. She did not want to raise this issue with her boss Evan (TJ Linnard) -- whom she slept with last season -- fearing the app getting shut down. That plan backfired almost immediately. Bans caused the White supremacists to react in an even more virulent manner and organize a protest.

'Good Trouble' Season 3 Episode 2 Spoilers: White supremacists swarm Mariana's app, will she shut it down?

When this happened, she decided to tell Evan so he could shut the whole thing down. Evan, however, argued against shutting down the app, His argument being they should not police who used it. Infuriated, Mariana quit her job. She and her team decide to start their own venture.

Starting her new job working for Kathleen Gale (Constance Zimmer), Callie (Maia Mitchell) got assigned to a college student named Shai who was being charged with indecent exposure after a cop found her in her car making out with her girlfriend. While Shai had no previous record and was an honor student, she would have to have a parent in the courtroom vouch for her and her parents don’t know she’s queer. Shai was willing to take the bad plea deal, but Kathleen refused to let that happen and took charge of it on her own. Callie learned a lot from Kathleen, especially that a lawyer is an actor who is “trying to manipulate the judge and jury,” and that she needed to “read the judge, read the jury, and put on a show.”

At Malika’s request, Callie took on the case of Yvonne, one of the women who had been helping her in holding. She did a good job in court and got the judge to lower her bail. But it was still too high. Here, Malika came to the rescue. She decided that her crowdfunded bail money be used to pay the bail for a bunch of other women in holding with her. And Malika’s good karma came to her aid. Gael (Tommy Martinez) and Dyonte (Marcus Emanuel Mitchell) created an ad exposing DA Hansen’s misplaced loyalties and it went viral. Hansen subsequently dropped the charges against Malika.
