Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting: 6-year-old Steven Romero killed in gunfire had just celebrated his birthday in June: 'He had his whole life to live'
GILROY, CALIFORNIA: Out of the four people that were killed in Gilroy on Sunday at the horrific mass shooting at the town's annual Garlic Festival was 6-year-old, Steven Luciano Romero. He is the first victim to be identified from the shooting. The boy was at the festival with his family. His grandmother and his mother were also injured in the shooting. It has been confirmed that he passed away at St.Louise hospital, according to NBC Bay Area.
His grandmother and mother were taken to Valley Med at San Jose and for their gunshot injuries and were told that they would be going into surgery soon. His father told the publication that he was "just such a happy kid" and "was very active". Romero had just celebrated his sixth birthday at Legoland in June. Alberto Romero, the boy's father said that he hopes they get the shooters. One gunman was shot dead by police and there were unconfirmed reports a second suspect may be on the loose.
The father, who was visibly upset said that he felt that there was nothing he could do other than be there for his son before he put him in his "final resting spot". "My son had his whole life to live. He was only 6," said the grieving father. Alberto has another daughter, who is 9 years old.
His wife was shot twice - in the arm and the stomach while the grandmother was shot in the leg, he said. While Steven's mom is expected to make a full recovery, her mother is reportedly going through some insurance issues and is unable to get treatment, according to KRON4. Steven's other grandmother, who was with Alberto, her son, and her granddaughter said that she has no words to describe what had happened. "We are praying for his mum and his grandmother," she said.
He hasn't been able to talk to them since they were rushed to the hospital. He is said to have been at home with his daughter when his wife called him to tell him that they had been shot.
