'General Hospital' celebrates Maurice Benard's 25th year as Sonny in a very special episode
Maurice Benard appeared as everyone's favorite Sonny on 'General Hospital' for the first time on August 13, 1993
One of the joys of being a fan of soap operas is truly getting to enjoy the growth and journey of the characters that you love. For ‘General Hospital’ viewers specifically, it has been a real treat to watch Maurice Benard’s portrayal of Sonny Corinthos on ABC. In fact, it has been 25 years since he took on the role.
The showrunners were sure to acknowledge this monumental occasion with a special episode to treat their fans and Maurice alike. The celebrations started off with an amazing promo that showed photos of Sonny through the years.
The entire cast had joined hands to surprise Maurice when he reached the sets on Monday, sporting T-shirts that celebrated his 25-year anniversary. They yelled “surprise,” and handed him a huge cake, after which he was compelled to give a speech.
“You’ve got the bipolar egomaniac method actor who had to win an Emmy. And I’m going to tell you why I had to win that Emmy. Because of one person. His name is Steve Burton [Jason]. Because he called me the male Susan Lucci of soap operas,” he said amid laughter and hoots, according to Soap Hub.
I love my GH family. I want to thank ABC, Frank Valentini and the incomparable Scott Tucker who continues to make magic with promos. #Repost @generalhospitalabc ・・・ Congratulations to @MauriceBenard on 25 years of excellence! It was on August 13, 1993, that we first met Sonny. He was first introduced as the nightclub owner and racketeer who had a huge influence on the impressionable young Karen Wexler (portrayed then by Cari Shayne, later by Jennifer Hammon and finally by Marie Wilson). He caught the interest of the viewers immediately and as his rankings in the criminal community grew, his popularity among ‘General Hospital’ fans did as well.
In fact, he soon became a central character on the ABC soap, with many storylines being introduced that would give us insight into his family, friends, and criminal empire. Over the course of his 25-year tenure as Sonny, Maurice has been nominated for seven Daytime Emmy and took home the golden lady, for the first time in 2003. He is also the recipient of four Soap Opera Digest Awards and has been nominated for four ALMA Awards.
'General Hospital' (GH) airs weekdays on ABC. Check your local listings for airtimes.
