'We've all been there': Gay icon Jojo Siwa dragging the word 'lesbian' shows stigma fueled by porn, say fans

'This is what happens when words become stigmatized or associated more with porn than anything else,' said one tweet

Looks like JoJo Siwa is having a bad day on social media. After first getting dragged for tagging the 46-year-old actress Candace Cameron Bure as the “rudest celebrity” she ever met, the ‘Dance Moms’ alum later got pulled up for not liking the term “lesbian.”
 
JoJo Siwa, who came out as gay in January 2021, in an interview with Yahoo! Life, got slammed on Twitter after she discussed her choices as a queer woman. The19-year-old claimed that she loves dressing in colorful clothes, adding that lesbians are often stereotyped as masculine. Siwa added that she did not like the term “lesbian,” which did not go down well with the majority of social media users.

‘I don’t like the word itself’

During a recent conversation with Yahoo! Life, JoJo first revealed that she never takes the honor of being a gay icon lightly. “It’s not about being comfortable with being the face of the LGBTQ young demographic. It’s about being honored with that” adding, “It’s something that I’ve been appointed by, not myself, by just the world calling me a gay icon, calling me this generation’s icon. That is an honor I do not take lightly.”
 
The ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ judge then claimed she did not like the word “lesbian”. “I think that’s a thing, is a lot of times lesbians are taken to be masculine. ‘If you’re a lesbian, do you wanna be a boy?’ That’s not the case. There are plenty of very feminine lesbians”, said Siwa, who earlier said the term pansexual would be the best fit for her. She concluded, “I don’t like the word itself. It’s like the word moist. Ugh!” JoJo Siwa, who's real name is Joelle Joanie ‘JoJo’ Siwa, is rumored to be dating Kylie Prew again, months after they first split.

Social media users logged into Twitter to slam JoJo Siwa on her new comments. “First girl in red now JoJo Siwa, lesbian is not a dirty word and the stigma needs to be unlearned BADLY”, referring to Queer singer 'Girl in Red' who had said “lesbian” was her least favorite word way back in 2020. Another user posted, “JoJo Siwa is saying she technically is a lesbian but doesn’t like the term because it feels a lot like saying the word “moist” and i don’t blame her because we’ve all been there but this is what happens when words become stigmatized or associated more with porn than anything else.”
 
Another posted, “Watching jojo siwa get lit up for the exact same thing i thought when i first accepted being gay after literal years of seeing people treat the word lesbian like it was the worst thing on earth.” The next one tweeted, “JoJo Siwa hating the word lesbian is very unsurprising to me this happens all the time.” One user added, “To all my lesbian followers you guys are so f**king valid and i love you all so much lesbian is a beautiful word and you shouldn’t be ashamed to say it f**k jojo siwa.” Meanwhile, an individual asserted, “Like how is jojo siwa just gonna perpetuate the stigmatisation that comes with the term “lesbian” … it really be your own people sometimes.” And, another concluded, “What is it with these queer women hating the word lesbian, first girl in red and now jojo siwa ?? really gross ur literally pushing the "lesbian is a dirty word" issue that lesbians tirelessly try to erase.”
