‘Game of Thrones’ is undoubtedly one of the greatest TV shows of all time and completely changed the way the world thought about fantasy on the small screen. The HBO show provided unforgettable moments, near-perfect episodes and stunning seasons throughout its run. But, the last season aka Season 8 left everyone shocked and fans were really frustrated with how things were rushed without giving proper explanations to some of the events.

The series will be celebrating its 10th anniversary on April 17 and fans are hoping to get some exciting news about the upcoming spin-offs. The official Twitter handle of the show sent everyone into a frenzy after mysteriously tweeting “Winter is Coming” on Wednesday, April 14.
Fans went berserk on social media and speculated what the tweet could mean. Most of the fans wanted the network to remake Season 8 and give all the characters a fitting farewell. Truth behind  ‘Winter is Coming’ tweet

As soon as the fans saw the tweet, they started speculating that something big is coming. People also said that the network might have heard their voices and is planning to come out with another ‘GoT’ season. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. The social media handle has been posting a lot of content in recent times and it is for promoting the new “Iron Anniversary” event on HBO Max, which celebrates the show being 10 years old. The ‘Game of Thrones’ Twitter account has also requested fans to “MaraThrone” the entire series to raise money for various charities.

Meanwhile, some fans are convinced the tweet has something to do with the ‘GoT’ prequel, ‘House of the Dragon’. The network is currently working on a prequel series based on author George RR Martin’s book ‘Fire & Blood’, which is set 300 years before the events of the original show. It focuses on the rise and fall of House Targaryen. The show will reportedly focus on the ‘Dance of the Dragons’, which is the Targaryen civil war of succession between Aegon II and his half-sister Rhaenyra over their father Viserys' throne.

‘Winter has Gone and you blew it’

Fans were pretty excited when the tweet surfaced on the micro-blogging platform and started praying for something special to come. But there were many who believed that having another season makes no sense at all.

One user wrote, “Winter has GONE. YOU BLEW IT.” Another user noted, “Ya I am not falling for that again.” Another user shared, “Winter was coming for 7 seasons then died in a week.” Meanwhile, another user posted, “Winter came and couldn't even make past the north! The biggest threat in the history of Westeros with thousands of years of preparations lasted one night against the 1st prepared army they met! What a joke!”

“Winter’s been coming. Just sitting here waiting for GRRM to finally finish the book,” another user shared. On the other hand, another user wrote, "The poor intern who tweeted winter is coming for sure is backing their bags....... do you not remember season 8 queen."

Why fans are hoping for another ‘Game of Thrones’ season

No points in guessing that ‘Game of Thrones’ was the number one show in the world whenever the network aired a new season. For the first six seasons, the show kept us at the edge of our seats by doing that no one ever imagined. However, things started to go downhill with Season 7. The penultimate season was good, but it was still regarded as one of the weaker seasons in the show’s history.

But then, the final season arrived and dashed all the hopes of a befitting end. Since Martin was unable to finish the books on time, the show-runners, David Benioff and DB Weiss, had to fill in the gaps and finish the series. In the first half of the season, protagonists Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and their allies face off against the Night King to a somewhat anticlimactic end as Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) stabs him. In the second half of the season, Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) gathers an army to take on Jon, Daenerys and their allies. Daenerys burns down half of the King’s Landing and in the process, loses a lot of her humanity. But in a shocking turn of events, Jon puts an end to her destruction by killing the Mother of Dragons in return.

As soon as the war gets over, Bran Stark (Issac Hempstead) is chosen as the new king while Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) becomes Queen of the Winterfell. The creators took six long years to develop the characters that everybody loved and shockingly decided to abandon the characters, putting all their efforts to end the show by showing just sensation. The script for the eighth season was really weak and the way the writers handled the Jon Snow-Daenerys Targaryen situation in the finale episode really angered the fans.

At the time, a lot of fans slammed the show-runners for creating such a weak script. Since then, ardent fans of the show have been urging the network to redo the final season and give them a satisfying end. However, the network has never commented on the show bringing out another season.

Is there a possibility of a remake?

Ever since Season 8 ended, fans have been urging HBO for another season. They started trending it on social media and even started a petition. More than 1.7 million people signed the petition at the time and surprisingly, the petition has started to attain more and more signatures after the recent tweet. At the time of writing this article 1,842,244 have signed the petition which has 3,000,000 signature goal.

But, is there a real possibility that HBO would come out and make another season? Whenever you ask such a question to the fans, they reply that if Zack Snyder got to do it then why not Benioff and Weiss.

To an extent, they are right. If Snyder can shoot additional scenes and come out with a completely new movie, then why not give a chance to the ‘GoT’ showrunners. But HBO is not thinking about that all and has already said that they are not involved in the conversation.

During the Television Critics Association's recent summer press tour in California in 2019, HBO president of programming Casey Bloys discussed the final season of the show and addressed the petition calling for a remake. “There are very few downsides to having a hugely popular show. One I can think of, when you try to end it, many people have opinions on how to end it. I think that comes with the territory. The petition shows a lot of enthusiasm and passion for the show, but it wasn't something we seriously considered. I can't imagine another network would,” Entertainment Weekly quoted Bloys, as saying.

Apart from the comments made by Bloys, it is really not easy to make a TV show and with the production level of ‘Game of Thrones’, it is certainly not feasible for the network to work on it once again and abandon all the spin-offs that are in the works.
