Meet Ryan Murphy’s The Shards Cast, Including Who Plays The Real Bret Easton Ellis

Igby Rigney takes the lead as Bret Easton Ellis, a 17-year-old aspiring writer who also narrates the show. FX describes him as “Ambitious, dazzlingly intelligent, and prone to exaggeration and embellishment. Eager for liberation from the expectations of his milieu, but more terrified than he'd admit about the realities of the adult world. He suspects the new kid might be a serial killer and will risk everything—his friends, his reputation, even his life—to prove it.” Rigney previously starred in The Midnight Club, Midnight Mass, The Fall of the House of Usher, F9: The Fast Saga, and Blue Bloods.

Homer Gere steps into the role of Robert Mallory, the brooding newcomer. According to his character description, Mallory’s “mysterious past follows him to his new home at the center of Bret's universe. Strange, seductive, and sophisticated, his arrival at school will have calamitous consequences.” He is “the object of Bret's growing obsession—and Susan's star-crossed affections.” Before The Shards, he was seen as Dylan Reed in Euphoria Season 3.

Thom Wright brings Graham Campbell to life. Wright is “the golden boy—a popular charmer who projects a certainty that the world was built just for him. He dates Susan Reynolds, and they are seemingly the perfect shiny high school couple. The arrival of Robert Mallory threatens to upend every part of his seemingly perfect life.” His credits include 2 Broke Girls and the Broadway production Appropriate. 

Kaia Gerber flaunts her acting skills by portraying Susan Reynolds, the most popular girl in school. She is a “cheerleader, destined to be homecoming queen. Glamorous, distant, and melancholic. Far too grown up for her own good. Happily in love with her high-school sweetheart, Thom—until the new kid shows up.” Gerber has made a name for herself in the modeling industry and has worked with high-end brands since the age of 10. Her acting credits include Palm Royale, Overcompensating, Mother Mary, Saturday Night, Shell, Bottoms, American Horror Story: Double Feature, among others.

Bret’s longtime girlfriend, Debbie Schaffer, is played by Hayes Warner. According to her official character bio, “Perpetually in the shadow of her popular best friend Susan Reynolds, Debbie is determined to break free from the restrictions and secrets of her boyfriend and father, as well as the expectations of high school.” Warner is a rising pop artist and was named an ‘Artist to Watch’ by People magazine. The Shards marks her on-screen acting debut. Hopefully, she will be seen in more projects in the future. 

Wes Bentley stars as Terry Schaffer, a “sinister and seductive figure” who has “accumulated wealth and accolades.” According to FX, “He has a strained relationship with his daughter, Debbie, and lusts after Bret’s youth and talent. They form an uneasy partnership that, if exposed, could destroy them both.” Fans may recognize Bentley from Yellowstone, American Beauty, The Hunger Games, Interstellar, and American Horror Story.

Terry’s wife and Debbie’s mother, Liz Schaffer, is portrayed by Evan Rachel Wood. Liz is a “former model who dreamed of stardom but settled for a comfortable, if lonely, life with Terry. Long-suffering and lonely, she is competitive with both her daughter and husband. She longs to be seen again—eternally ready for a close-up that never came.” Wood is an Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe Award nominee who has made a name for herself with projects such as Westworld, Mildred Pierce, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, and The Wrestler. She has also earned praise for her stage performances in A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Father, Romeo and Juliet, and many more.

Jordan Roth takes on the role of Terry’s assistant, Steven Reinhardt, who “traffics in secrets, favors, and quiet acts of manipulation. As fluent in the private lives of Hollywood power players as he is in the dramas of Bret's teenage circle, Steven is an underestimated presence.” The seven-time Tony Award-winning producer has championed Broadway shows such as Moulin Rouge!, Hadestown, Springsteen on Broadway, The Book of Mormon, Into the Woods, Kinky Boots, Clybourne Park, Hair, and Angels in America. The Shards marks his television acting debut.
