CBS Cancels 4 Shows Ahead of 2026–27 Season, Including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Neighborhood

After more than three decades on CBS, The Late Show has come to an end. Stephen Colbert, who succeeded David Letterman in 2015, hosted the late-night staple for 11 seasons. The show's final episode drew 6.74 million viewers, making it the most-watched weekday broadcast in its history. Addressing the cancellation, Paramount and CBS said the decision was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night” and was not “related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

CBS also pulled the plug on The Neighborhood after an eight-season run, bringing an end to the sitcom starring Cedric the Entertainer and Max Greenfield. Speaking on The Breakfast Club in April 2026, Cedric suggested cast salary negotiations played a role in the decision. “After eight seasons, everybody needed raises and that's when you knew, ‘Alright this show is getting ready to be done’,” he said. Though CBS offered him a raise, Cedric wasn't interested in moving forward without the rest of the cast. He explained, “You want everybody to eat with you ... I'm not getting ready to be that guy where I'm just the only one eating.”

CBS also canceled Watson after two seasons. The medical mystery drama reimagined the Sherlock Holmes universe, with Morris Chestnut starring as Dr. John Watson, who launches a medical practice following Holmes’ death. Speaking at a press event in April, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach praised the actor, saying, “Morris Chestnut is maybe one of the greatest No. 1’s I’ve ever dealt with,” but explained that the network had to make “tough decisions” to make room for new shows.

Another CBS cancellation was DMV, a workplace comedy centered on the everyday frustrations inside a Department of Motor Vehicles office. Like Watson, the show was canceled as CBS reshaped its lineup for new programming. At the press event, CBS Entertainment President Amy Reisenbach expressed support for the series, saying, “In terms of DMV and Watson, we love both those shows. They were a joy to work on. But, you know, it’s a high bar on CBS.”
