All the Jack Ryan movies ranked as Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War hits streaming

Starring Chris Pine as Ryan, the studio reboot is in fact an original story rewriting the the character's origin. Pine's version is seen studying at the London School of Economics during the 9/11 terror attacks. He later joins the marines, and is eventually recruited by the CIA. The movie passes off for a one-time watch, but lacks the punch and grit of the quintessential Jack Ryan films. Thrown in mixed reviews criticizing the screenplay and cast performances, Shadow Recruit falls at the bottom of the ladder.

The Sum of all Fears starred Ben Affleck as Jack Ryan and Morgan Freeman as CIA Director William Cabot. The plot was about a nuclear attack planned on US soil, and even had a romantic arc for the character at the end. While the thriller gets full marks for the effects and the fast-paced plotline, the tone is a major letdown, and takes the fifth spot in our rankings.

Patriot Games follows Harrison Ford in his first outing as Jack Ryan. He takes on terrorist Sean Miller (Sean Bean) in a film that sees the action factor rise with each act. While the film's climax saw mixed responses, the film went on to be a commerical success, with critics praising Ford's near-accurate portrayal of the character from Tom Clancy's books.

While a bit lengthy than it's 1992 predecessor, Clear and Present Danger fared better. It was more riveting and action-packed than Patriot Games. Ford returned to reprise his role as the Ryan, and had the perfect complement in Willem Dafoe's John Clark, often described as the dark side of Ryan. He is exactly the opposite of Ford's character. The film went on to be another critical and commercial success.

Based on a story by Krasinski and Noah Oppenheim, Ghost War is the sixth film and third reboot in the Jack Ryan series. The slick and well-received thriller follows Ryan who is thrust back into the world of espionage and deception. With James Greer (Wendell Pierce), he races against time as he confronts a rogue black-ops outfit threatening to recreate a thwarted bombing from two decades ago.

The first Jack Ryan movie, and undoubtedly still the best. The Hunt for Red October stars Alec Baldwin as Ryan and is set in the Cold War era. Rogue Soviet naval captain (Sean Connery) tests the analyst at every turn in a game of deciphering motives. The political thriller was one of the finest films of its time and set the groundwork for more Jack Ryan films. Directed by John McTiernan of the Predator and Die Hard fame, the actioner was a solid box office success.
