A Look at All the ‘Scooby-Doo’ Live-Action Cast Members as Netflix Casts a Real Dog as Scooby for the First Time

McKenna Grace will play the fashionista Daphne Blake in the series. As per TUDUM, Daphne will be enjoying her final summer at camp when an intriguing case captures her attention. 'Scooby Doo: Origins' will bring the four teens and the Great Dane together to form the famous Mystery Inc. The available updates suggest that Daphne will already be friends with Shaggy and will eventually form lifelong bonds with Velma, Fred, and Scooby Doo after getting embroiled in the haunting mystery. Grace is not a novice in the Scooby-Doo universe, having previously voiced Daphne's character in the 2020 animated film Scoob! The actress is ecstatic about getting the part and shared her excitement with The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m so excited! I love Daphne; I dressed up as her for 2 or 3 Halloweens. I’m obsessed with Daphne; she’s my favorite character… I’m gonna rewatch every Scooby Doo movie & series,” Grace shared with the journalist on the Oscar Red Carpet.  

The fandom was shocked when Tanner Hagen was cast to play the fan-favorite Shaggy Rogers in Scooby Doo: Origins. Matthew Lillard has left an insurmountable impression on the character and its fans by playing it brilliantly in live-action movies Scooby-Doo (2002) and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (2004). The team showed massive trust in a relatively new actor, Hagen, by choosing him to take over the part. Before the Netflix movie, the actor's resume consisted of just an episodic appearance in HBO Max’s 'The Pitt 'and a YouTube series by Dhar Mann. As mentioned in the previous slide, in this series, Shaggy will already know Daphne as a childhood friend. Both of them will be on their summer vacation at Camp Ruby-Spears at the inception. Netflix recently released a video of him playing with Scooby-Doo, which suggests he will also share a close bond with the adorable Great Dane. Just Jared has also released images of Hagen filming the character in the quintessential Shaggy hairstyle. 

Abby Ryder Fortson will play the pragmatic and scientific townie Velma in the Netflix adaptation. Fortson has previously dazzled audiences with her performance in 'Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.' Linda Cardellini, who played Velma in two live-action adaptations, gave Fortson her blessings and asked her to enjoy her time in the character's shoes. "Just have fun. It is such a wonderful fandom, and people have loved Velma since childhood....She (Abby) will be a wonderful Velma," Cardellini shared with ET when asked to advise the new actress. Abby was delighted to hear Cardellini's thoughts and expressed her regards in the comment section. The only thing currently known about Velma is that she gets embroiled in this mystery; fans, though, are hoping that the series addresses the long-standing mystery about her sexuality. 

Maxwell Jenkins has been working in the industry for quite some time. He has previously acted in projects like 'Jack Reacher,' 'Lost in Space,' 'A Family Man,' 'Sense8,' 'Dear Edward,' and 'Arcadian.' Fred Jones is his most high-profile role to date. As per the synopsis, Fred is the 'strange but ever-so-handsome new kid' in this iteration. Jenkins was a huge Scooby-Doo fan, so the role must have been a dream-come-true moment for him. He shared a snap of himself as a child wearing a Scooby-Doo shirt along with the 'OG Scoob.'

Since Netflix announced their Scooby-Doo adaptation, fans have been waiting with bated breath to find out who will play the titular Great Dane. The query was finally put to rest when the streamer released new footage on June 8, 2026. For the first time, the pup will be played by a real-life animal. In the video, the pup is seen wandering through the woods when he suddenly comes across Shaggy. Later, we see him in his best friend's embrace. The revelation has created a lot of stir on social media, with some voicing their displeasure while certain fans can't get enough of the pup's cuteness. It remains unknown whether the pup will talk in the series, though there were rumors that the streamer is looking to hire Scooby-Doo voice actors. The animal's name has not been disclosed yet, but Netflix has released a cast photo.
