A Complete Guide to 6 ‘Yellowstone’ Spinoffs, from ‘1883’ and ‘Dutton Ranch’ to What’s Coming Next
1883
With the Yellowstone franchise continuing to grow, keeping track of every spinoff has become a little tricky for newcomers trying to enter Taylor Sheridan’s Western universe. One of the first expansions of the original series was 1883, a 10-episode prequel released in 2021. The series follows the Dutton family’s dangerous journey across the Great Plains as they head toward Montana to build what would later become the Yellowstone Ranch. The cast is led by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, alongside Sam Elliott, Isabel May, and Billy Bob Thornton.
1923
After the events of 1883, the Yellowstone story continued with another prequel, 1923, which explored a later generation of the Dutton family. The series focuses on the older Duttons, played by Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren, as they struggle to keep their Montana ranch alive during one of America’s toughest periods. The story takes place during Prohibition and the years surrounding the Great Depression, while drought and financial hardship continue putting pressure on the family from all sides. The first season premiered in late 2022, while the second arrived in February 2025. Sheridan designed the show as a two-season limited series from the beginning.
1944
1944 is another planned addition to Taylor Sheridan’s growing Yellowstone universe and will continue exploring the Dutton family’s past. The upcoming series was first announced by Paramount in November 2023 and is expected to connect the timeline between earlier prequels like 1883 and 1923 and the modern Yellowstone story. Set during World War II, the show will reportedly focus on another generation of the Dutton family as they deal with the pressures and uncertainty of that era. Paramount has not yet announced casting details or an official release date, as the project is still in development.
Marshals
Marshals continues the Yellowstone universe in a modern-day setting while also acting as a follow-up to the original ranch drama. The series focuses on Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) after he steps away from the Dutton ranch life to work with an elite U.S. Marshals unit in Montana. Using his ranching background, military training, and tracking abilities, Kayce helps hunt dangerous fugitives in high-risk operations across the state. The show debuted on March 1, with its first season nearing the finish line as the penultimate episode arrives May 17 and the finale follows on May 24. CBS renewed the series for Season 2 less than two weeks after its premiere.
Dutton Ranch
Dutton Ranch picks up after the events of Yellowstone and follows Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler as they attempt to rebuild their lives far from Montana. Led by Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser, the nine-episode drama begins after a devastating wildfire destroys much of their former home. The couple relocates to South Texas, where they take on the challenge of creating a new ranch while dealing with unfamiliar surroundings and new obstacles. The series premiered globally on May 15, with its first two episodes released together on Paramount+. Episode 3 is scheduled to arrive on May 22.
6666
6666 was announced in 2021 as another modern-day story connected to the Yellowstone universe. The project was set at the famous Four Sixes Ranch in Texas and was expected to follow Jimmy Hurdstrom (Jefferson White) after his move away from the Yellowstone ranch. However, despite early excitement around the spinoff, the project has remained inactive for quite some time. Reports suggest Sheridan shifted attention toward other high-priority shows, including Dutton Ranch. Although Paramount has not formally confirmed a permanent cancellation, the series is currently considered indefinitely delayed and largely viewed as shelved for now.
