5 New Movies and TV Shows to Watch This Weekend on HBO, Netflix and More: From Beauty in Black to Mother Mary

Netflix really knows how to spoil binge-watchers. Season 3 of Beauty in Black premiered on August 27, with all eight episodes dropping at once on the platform. The streamer teases the show’s return with “even higher stakes.” In the latest instalment, “As Kimmie (Taylor Polidore Williams) fights to retain her spot at the top of the Bellarie family’s business empire, old enemies plot their next move, and dangerous secrets threaten to unravel everything she's fought to build.” The previous two seasons are also available to watch on Netflix, so anyone who hasn’t started the series yet has plenty of episodes to catch up on.

Anne Hathaway has been on a roll this year, starring in multiple projects. One of them is Mother Mary, which was released in theaters on April 24. Now, the film has landed on HBO Max as of August 21, meaning fans can stream the musical psychological drama from the comfort of their homes. A24 describes the movie as: “Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance.”

After making fans wait for more than two years, Dark Matter premiered Season 2 on August 28 on Apple TV+. Following the debut, new episodes are scheduled to arrive weekly on Fridays, with the finale set for October 30. According to the streamer, “Dark Matter is a story about the road not taken.” Season 2 “picks up with the Dessens as they settle into a quiet life in a world that finally seems safe until the unimaginable forces them to run once again. As Jason’s (Joel Edgerton) obsession with the Box deepens, Daniela’s (Jennifer Connelly) growing paranoia pushes her to the brink, threatening to tear their fragile stability apart. Elsewhere, Amanda and Ryan join forces in a desperate attempt to find their way home. With Blair determined to stop him, Leighton relentlessly chases his grand vision of creating a perfect world.”

Icefall is also now available to stream on OTT after its theatrical release in 2025. In this movie, “A young Native American game warden and an infamous poacher are forced to team up to prevent a group of criminals from retrieving millions of dollars from a crashed plane beneath a frozen lake.” Viewers can watch the action thriller on Prime Video. 

Abbott Elementary is a workplace comedy in which “a group of teachers are brought together in a Philadelphia public school.” Season 5 premiered on ABC on October 1, 2025, and wrapped its 22-episode run on April 22, 2026. And now the season can be watched on HBO Max, with the streamer adding Season 5 to its library on August 22. But, what about the previous four seasons? Don’t worry, they are also available on Max, so fans can binge the entire series.
