Television host, theater artist, singer, LGBTQIA+ activist; these are just a few of the many hats that Frankie Grande dons. Joining MEA WorldWide (MEAWW) for a casual chat, 37-year-old Grande, who reprises his role as Franz in the latest Los Angeles production of the iconic Broadway jukebox musical ‘Rock Of Ages’, spoke about his role and how he felt about his character being cut from the film adaptation, among other things.

Talking about the 'immersive' nature of the LA production of the musical, Grande said, “it has been really cool. It’s totally different from the Broadway show. Like completely different.”

In the 2012 film adaptation of the musical, which starred Russell Brand, Alec Baldwin, Paul Giamatti, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Malin Åkerman, Mary J. Blige, Bryan Cranston and Tom Cruise, the character of Franz was unfortunately cut off. Grande said, “it was hard for me to watch. Because you know, what they did -- they decided to do by cutting Franz from the film and cutting Regina (Lauren Molina in Broadway), making them all part of Catherine Zeta-Jones’ weird… It was a lot.”

He added: “You cut a big part of the heart out of the show.”

Grande also spoke about his activism and politics: “In the past four years, our administration has gotten increasingly more aggressive towards anti-LGBT legislation, and towards stripping away rights that we have been fighting for all of these years, prior to our current administration. So it was my responsibility to step up as an advocate.”

“I have the platform, I have the voice, I have the brain; put all those things together and I can affect change in this world and also inspire other people who are in places of power or who are allies -- we love our allies -- to step forward on behalf of the LGBT community,” Grande went on. “Stop treating us like a subclass of humans. That is not what we are. In fact, we are the most fabulous class of humans.”
