Former 'Love Island' host Caroline Flack has been found dead in her new east London apartment after she reportedly took her own life. She was just 40.

Flack's death was confirmed by her family in a statement that read: "We can confirm that our Caroline passed away today on the 15th February. We would ask that the press both respect the privacy of the family at this difficult time."

Her death comes just weeks before she was set to go on trial for the assault of her ex-tennis player boyfriend, Lewis Burton, whom she allegedly attacked with a lamp in December. The accusations had seen her depart her role as a host of ITV2's 'Love Island,' with Laura Whitmore taking her place.

It is still unclear why Flack committed suicide. She had posted on Instagram as recently as Thursday, February 13, uploading a series of snaps captioned with a love heart emoji.

Those posts were seemingly made in response to Burton, 27, contacting her on the social media platform. He had posted a picture of them together and written, "Happy valentines [red love heart] Love you [kissing emoji]."

On the same day, she had also announced that she would be breaking her silence on recent reports about her personal life. "I'm going to speak today… mine and my family's life is no longer up for entertainment or gossip," she wrote.

However, she seemed to change her mind, with a source revealing, "Caroline wanted to speak as she's so sick of all the rumors and speculation about her."

"But she posted on Instagram without thinking and once she had some time to calm down she knew better to keep quiet until the time is right," the source added.

Burton was reportedly informed of Flack's death while on a skiing holiday with his friends and traveled back to the UK last night. The 40-year-old's death has also left her parents Christine and Ian, brother Paul and sisters Elizabeth and Jody understandably heartbroken.
