A couple from Florida is facing felony charges for “child neglect with great bodily harm” according to reports. Cheyanne Bury Schilling aged 24 and her partner Jonathan Lopez, 25, are reportedly being held in the Columbia County Jail, with a bond of $25,000 as the penalty.

The investigation began on January 8, after the death of a child at the Lake City hospital according to the warrant. The details from the reports reveal that a three-month-old toddler was taken to a hospital where it was pronounced dead. It further stated that the mother, Bury Schilling, had to be transported to a hospital after expressing suicidal thoughts to emergency medical personnel.

The signs and symptoms of drug abuse were reportedly so evident in the mother that she had to be sedated. According to The Sun, Bury Schilling was placed under “involuntary institutionalization for mental health examination” under Florida’s Baker Act. The doctors reportedly claimed that she showed signs of illegal drug use, including “track marks and burns on her finger”

Reports suggested that when the detectives entered the house, they found another toddler whose face was bloodied. The warrants revealed that the child tested positive for narcotics following a few tests. The cops said that the Department of Children and Families took hair follicle samples for the tests.

The investigators reportedly told News4Jax that the family lived in a trailer that was “very dirty and unfit for children”. The investigation was carried for months. Addressing the duration it took to issue a warrant against the couple, investigators said the process was delayed as they were waiting for the autopsy reports of the three-month-old toddler who was found dead and the other child who was put into foster care. The reports also show that Bury Schilling was in violation of felony probation in Orange County. She reportedly had a red-light ticket against her from 2016.

This isn’t the first time a child has tested positive for narcotics or died from the presence of drugs due to its usage by the mother. A similar incident had occurred in Philadelphia a few months ago when a woman ended up killing her 11-week-old baby by allegedly transmitting drugs through her breast milk. A 30-year-old, Samantha Jones, following the death the infant was charged with criminal homicide, which reportedly took place on April 2, 2020. The court papers said that the child was being fed breast milk containing amphetamine, methamphetamine, and methadone, which reportedly caused its death.

Meanwhile, in February, another couple from California was charged with nine counts of felony torture and six counts of felony child abuse, after investigators found 10 children living in their home under “horrible” conditions. In their statement, the offices in charge of the case said that the house was littered with human and animal feces and urine, surrounded by garbage and rotten food. It was further reported that heaps of garbage blocked the view of certain areas, where the children were allegedly subjected to emotional and physical abuse.
