In episode 7 of ‘Fargo’ Season 4, many important things went down. For one, despite Josto’s (Jason Schwartzman) best efforts to kill several birds with one stone, Loy (Chris Rock) did not take the bait. He and Ebal (Francesco Acquaroli) went to visit Loy to negotiate Gaetano’s (Salvatore Esposito) release. After all, New York, not knowing what was going on in Kansas City, had ordered Josto to make amends with his brother Gaetano.

Ebal presented a fair deal to Loy. They get Gaetano back in one piece, and in return, he’d get significant parts of their businesses. He also guaranteed that Gaetano would go back to Italy, causing no further harm to their dealings. But before Loy could even contemplate, Josto threw in a wild card -- one that could have just gotten both of them killed at that very moment.

He told Loy that Calamita (Gaetano Bruno) had conspired with Gaetano against him. And that he had crossed the line and disrupted the truce between the two gangs by killing Loy’s son Satchel (Rodney L Jones III). Loy’s anger was palpable. Josto said that it would only be fair if Loy killed his son Zero (who was in Loy’s custody just like Satchel was in Josto’s). But he suggested that since “a life for a life” was the deal anyway, he might as well do that to Gaetano, who was already his captive.

But Loy let go of Gaetano, telling him that Josto had asked Loy to kill him. It is no secret that Gaetano, an unpredictable and psychotic man, did not respect Josto. But this only would aggravate that. So, what is up next?

Episode 8, titled ‘The Nadir’, will obviously see the repercussions of Gaetano’s release. Loy’s gamble was a chaotic one by all standards. Gaetano is unpredictable and unhinged and his anger could spill both ways -- towards Loy and towards Josto. But with Loy, he is at least prepared. Josto has no idea that Loy has released Gaetano, let alone that he now knows his brother wanted him dead. In the promo for the episode, we see Josto getting punched in the face so hard that he is knocked over backward. But we don’t see who punched him. The best guess is that it is Gaetano. But that can’t be the extent of his vengeance. But will Gaetano kill Josto for what he planned?

If nothing else, Gaetano respects the concept of family. He, like an archetypal Italian mobster, believes in the power of families. So, he might not kill him. He definitely, however, will try and take over the family as its head. It will be interesting to see how Josto is caught off-guard. And what he will do once he realizes Gaetano is out to get him.

Also, this episode, as per the promo video will see a face-off. Dick 'Deafy' Wickware (Timothy Olyphant), the Mormon cop, will go after Swanee (Kelsey Asbille) and Zelmare (Karen Aldridge). And when he does, obviously the duo will retaliate. At the same time, Odis (Jack Huston), who hates Deafy, will intervene. Will this lead to one or more characters dying? Hopefully, it won’t. But knowing ‘Fargo’, uncertainty is the only certainty.

‘Fargo’ Season 4 airs every Sunday at 9 pm ET, only on FX.
