'Evil' Season 3 Episode 4: Is demon of the road FAKE? What is its connection with the Vatican?

In the new season of 'Evil', Kristen (Katja Herbers), David (Mike Colter), and Ben (Aasif Mandvi ) return to investigate strange, supposed abnormal events including demonic possessions, and try to find a logical explanation behind these "supernatural" events. The latest episode sees the trio investigate a case in which truck drivers become the targets of some strange haunting and supernatural events on a highway exit.
In the fourth episode titled ‘The Demon of the Road', a woman named Jacqueline asks David to investigate her husband who recently had a haunting experience on a highway. David, along with Kristen and Ben, arrives at Jacqueline’s home. They meet her husband Jason, who is a truck driver. Jason tells them that while returning home, he was followed by a strange figure.

Ben suggests that the strange figure might have been a drone. Jason states he saw a shadowy figure but could not figure out what it actually was. Jason's revelation leads the trio to further investigate the case and they eventually find out that several truck drivers have experienced similar events. They interview these drivers to learn more information. One driver reveals that the events occur on a highway exit which is dubbed "Ghost Highway" as it is haunted. When the trio drives on the highway, they have a deadly experience. There is a disturbance on their car radio, followed by demonic voices.
The next day, Jason goes missing and David searches for him on the Ghost Highway. During the search, David is attacked by a demon but he is saved by a vision of an Angel. Towards the end of the episode, the trio discovers a garage with a drone and other equipment being used to create the illusion of haunting experiences on the highway. They come to the conclusion that the Demon of the Road is fake and is just an illusion. The man behind this is Russ Owlman who wanted to create chaos among the truck drivers. Kristen destroys his equipment and the case is solved.
Later at night, David is visited by Victor LeConte who reveals the truth about the events on the highway. He says that Russ Owlman has died by suicide. LeConte mentions that Russ was a part of one of the Demonic Houses and therefore, he had to be killed so no one can spread evil in the world. David realizes that LeConte killed Russ and is disgusted by his actions. However, LeConte explains that the Vatican Agents have been destroying the Demonic Houses for centuries as a part of their plan to bring world peace. The episode ends with David having a moral dilemma due to his association with the Vatican.
