Elon Musk calls his father "pure evil" after he admits that he killed three men
Errol claims that Elon wanted him and his new wife, Heidi, to move to the US after he made his first billion with PayPal but Heidi wanted to go back to South Africa so Elon started the feud with him
Elon Musk is a name that is known all over the world, or at least, in the parts of the world where they would have heard about his products. He's a nerd, a genius, a billionaire and a philanthropist. Think Iron Man but in the flesh. Musk is determined to change the world for the better and he will not be stopped till he's done just that.
The electric cars from his company, Tesla, are already the best in the field. SpaceX and Hyperloop are his other on-going projects which will revolutionize the way we travel and get from point A to point B. Musk is like an intrepid explorer but instead of roaming the Amazonian jungles, he wants to explore space and find other planets that humankind can colonize.
He's talented for sure. The man has already started four companies which are worth a billion dollars at least so his business acumen is still as sharp as ever. Like every successful businessman who has worked hard and earned his billions, Elon also likes to enjoy the finer things in life and who can blame him? We would all probably do the same. He has five mansions in Bel Air, seven private jets and he has dated beautiful women in the past including actresses Amber Heard and Talulah Riley.
Even after all this success, though, there is one thing that Elon is still trying to achieve and that is having a peaceful family. This proves especially true when it comes to his strained relationship with his father, Errol Musk. The 46-year-old billionaire has not shied away from spawning spectacular headlines about his father and makes it very clear about what his opinions on the matter are.
In one interview with Rolling Stone America, Elon said with tears running down his face: "He was such a terrible human being, you have no idea."
"My dad will have a carefully thought-out plan of evil. He will plan evil. Almost every crime you can possibly think of, he has done. Almost every evil thing you could possibly think of, he has done. It’s so terrible, you can’t believe it."
The two Musk men have not spoken to each other in the past 18 months. They didn't speak even when 72-year-old Errol suprised his now-grown-up children with the news that he was a father again with his much younger wife.
Errol has always maintained a silence over his internationally famous son even though Elon has said a lot about how miserable his childhood was. That all changed when he invited a reporter from the Daily Mail to his lavish home which overlooks the coast of the Western Cape in South Africa. He had his own version of the provocative feud. He also made a shocking claim.
The man was charged once with manslaughter for shooting three men dead after they broke into his home. He was acquitted of the crime after he pleaded self-defense but he thinks that this was the reason that his son cannot stopping saying such venomous things about him.
"Elon needs to grow up," he said in the interview. "He needs to get over himself. I’m not going to hit back. I’m going to wait until he comes to his senses. He’s having a tantrum, like a spoilt child. He can’t have what he wants and now I am apparently an evil monster."
Errol still looks young for his age with a bright smile and a great sense of humour. He still flies his own plane and has a fishing boat that is parked in a garage right next to his beautiful silver Bentley Continental. He has portraits of his family placed on the mahogany dining table inside the house. Elon, Kimbal and their sister Tosca pose with their stepsisters Alexandra and Rose in various pictures.
The senior Musk is a successful consulting engineer and was married to former fashion model Maye. They had three children together, Elon, Kimbal, and Tosca, who were all given a luxurious lifestyle growing up. Errol was a millionaire before he hit the age of 30.
"I drove them to school in a convertible Rolls-Royce Corniche, they had thoroughbred horses to ride and motorbikes at the age of 14. They were spoilt, I suppose. Maybe that’s why Elon is acting like a spoilt child now," he says.
Errol also says that the "painful and isolated" childhood that Elon supposedly spent coupled with the fact that he had a father who was never around and who also criticised his budding scientific genius, was not true. "Elon has repeatedly told a story of me telling him computers were a waste of time. That’s untrue." He still talks about his son's early days of intellect with pride: "Elon has been generous enough to admit that he inherited his scientific genius from me."
"When he was 11, he pestered me to pay a huge sum to let him attend a computer course where the first IBM PC, with mouse and keyboard, was to be presented for the first time. Groundbreaking stuff. I told him to be quiet and well-behaved, to give his seat up to someone if necessary and sit on a step at the side of the stage."
"When I came back after two hours to collect him, I found most people had left but a group had gathered at the foot of the stage. In the centre was my small son, his sleeves rolled up, talking earnestly. A professor listening to him turned to me and said, 'This boy needs to get one of these computers.'"
By the time Elon was 15, he was spending hours in his bedroom at the huge desk he had. "I came in one day and saw a grey box with a red light going on and off. Elon told me, 'Dad, that’s a modem. I can connect my computer to a computer in Oxford, England. One day everybody will have one of these and they will all connect, all over the world.'"
Errol claims that the hours of lectures that Elon claimed he was subjected to as a child was to "pass on wisdom". "South Africa has never been an easy place to live. In the 70s, it was a battlefield to grow a successful business."
"Even my own mother called me ruthless in those days. We were all at each other’s throats looking for business. I also spent years in the military and that was hard in South Africa, where the world was frowning at everything we were doing."
Errol does admit one thing and that he is to blame for his divorce from Maye, after they spent 16 years of marriage together, which ended up splitting the family. "I had a very pretty wife, but there were always prettier, younger girls. I really loved Maye but I screwed up."
The senior Musk watched from a distance with pride as his eldest son blossomed into the man who got, as Errol describes it, "the most remarkable job in the world". In 2002, after Elon already made his first billion through PayPal, the son suggested that Errol and his new wife Heidi go and live close to him in Los Angeles.
The move did not go so well because Heidi, who is Afrikaans, was not happy to be so far away from the rest of her family who all stay in South Africa. Errol and Heidi moved back to South Africa after two years of living in Los Angeles. Errol thinks that his son took insult to him moving back and also says that this was "the first so-called terrible thing I did."
"Elon is upset with me," he says. "He is furious that he can’t force me to love America the way he does. I refuse to live there. I tried it, and came back home."
"He thought he knew better. America had made a successful inventor and scientist out of him and he believed it was the right place for all of us. Elon and his brother Kimbal were furious, like spoilt children with a total lack of human understanding about my situation."
"They said they were finished with us. But Elon had done all the documentation for our new lives — and we couldn’t get our passports."
Errol talks about this as Elon's "Tantrum Number 1". He and Heidi felt like prisoners living in LA at this point because they couldn't leave so they would plot their escape. The couple would make clandestine appointments to the South African embassy to try and get temporary passports. "I left everything behind. Elon disowned me, he said he wanted nothing more to do with me."
In time though, Elon's stance against his father softened and around one-and-a-half years ago, he flew to Cape Town in one of his private jets to throw his father a surprise birthday party.
"Tantrum Number 2" followed shortly after. "I got my 30-year-old girlfriend Jana pregnant and we had a baby son, who is now ten months old," he explains. "Of course, I love him dearly, even though it wasn’t planned. In my own cautious way I insisted on a DNA test to ensure he was mine. I told my daughter Ali about him because I thought she would be supportive and understanding. She said I was insane, mentally ill. She told the others and they went berserk. They think I’m getting senile and should go into an old age home, not have a life full of fun and a tiny baby."
This is the incident that he believed caused the now-famous interview in Rolling Stone. "I think Elon was emotionally fragile when he attacked me," Errol says.
"His girlfriend Amber Heard had dropped him and I believe he was crying for himself over the heartbreak. He describes me as terrible. But there are many things he doesn’t know – the work I did to lessen the effects of apartheid for so many years. I’d rather be in my home country, South Africa, with all its violent crime than live in the budgie cage of America," he says even though he had the first-hand experience of violence and that too at home.
Speaking on the incident where he had to kill 3 burglars who had broken a window in his upscale home in Johannesburg to get in. "I was at home with my daughter Rosie, and the breaking of glass woke us up. I did what I had to do and we somehow escaped unhurt."
Errol was acquited of the manslaughter charges on the grounds of self-defense. "That’s the only so-called terrible thing I’ve ever had to do. Maybe that’s what Elon is referring to. I’m not an evil person," he says. "I have nothing to regret. I’m just a father who loves his son — and all his children — and is happy to know they are safe and healthy and secure."
At present, Errol lives with a gorgeous woman and an infant son whom he loves. The question now is, does Errol crave for the same affection from his eldest son who lives in the US? Or is it, as Elon hints, a problem which they both have not been able to talk about yet?
Only time will tell for these two dominating personalities and whether their feud will ever be resolved.
