Eric Trump trolled over old video of Biden on same-sex marriage: 'Joe has evolved, what's your dad's excuse?'

The president's son posted the video from 2006 with the caption: 'I hope everyone in the #LGBTQ community is able to see this video of Joe Biden'

On Sunday, July 19, Eric Trump decided to give his father's election campaign a helping hand by posting an old video of presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden defending the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act in an interview. However, the video had an opposite effect than the one desired by Eric as most social media users began pointing out how the former vice president had evolved over the years regarding his views on the LGBTQ community, unlike his own family.

The clip was from a 2006 'Meet the Press' segment, where Biden was asked by then-host of the show, about then-President George W. Bush’s repeated calls for Congress to pass a Federal Marriage Amendment, banning same-sex marriage under the US Constitution. The measure ultimately ended up failing in Congress.

Although Biden, who was a senator from Delaware at the time, said in the interview that the amendment was not worth the Congress' time, he also reiterated that marriage by default was the union between opposite sexes. “We already have a law, the Defense of Marriage Act,” Biden said. “We’ve all voted — not, where I’ve voted, and others have said, look, marriage is between a man and a woman and states must respect that. Nobody’s violated that law, there’s been no challenge to that law. Why do we need a constitutional amendment? Marriage is between a man and a woman.”

He did vote against the Federal Marriage Amendment when it was brought up in front of the Congress both in 2004 as well as 2006 but his anti-LGBTQ stance at the time did go down in history as controversial. Eric captioned the video: "I hope everyone in the #LGBTQ community is able to see this video of Joe Biden." Despite his best efforts, people seem to remember the evolution that Biden's thoughts on the LGBTQ went through.

"Obama was against gay marriage too. But I’m pretty sure it was the Obama and Biden administration that made gay marriage a thing and lit up the White House like a rainbow. You guys are really terrible at being the first family," one wrote, while another said, "Wow, Joe has really evolved! Good on him! What’s your dad's excuse?" A third said: "He’s changed and admitted past mistakes. Your dad remains an blabbering (sic) #UnpresidentedIdiot." And a fourth said: "I hope everybody in the LBGTQ community is proud of how people grow and learn. And admit when they are wrong. Unlike trump"

Biden's words from back in 2006 stands in stark contrast to his speech in 2012 when he was applauded for coming out in favor of same-sex marriage. “I am absolutely comfortable with the fact that men marrying men, women marrying women and heterosexual men and women marrying one another are entitled to the same exact rights, all the civil rights, all the civil liberties,” Biden said. “And quite frankly, I don’t see much of a distinction — beyond that.

This was not the only anti-Biden tweet posted by Eric on Sunday. In a separate post, he wrote: ''Why is no one in the media willing to discuss Biden’s seemingly apparent cognitive decline? This is a US presidential election — frankly, the potential of this condition heading into the White House must be addressed, as uncomfortable, sad & difficult as that topic may be."
