‘Emergence’ Episode 7: Emily’s wrongdoing will need more than just Piper’s loyalty and Jo’s determination to be stopped
The previous episode of ABC’s ‘Emergence’, which aired ahead of its weeklong break, ended with a cliffhanger by hinting at Emily’s (Maria Dizzia) involvement in Piper’s (Alexa Swinton) creation. While we wracked our brains on Emily’s intentions with Piper, Episode 7 ‘Fatal Expectations’ only introduces us to more questions all episode long!
All this while, we gave Piper the benefit of doubt, as she constantly juggled between the real and virtual realm in search of her true identity. While Jo’s instincts were at a clamor due to all that she had been exposed to since the AI’s advent in her life, the turn of events in ‘Fatal Expectations’ draws her close to the actuality of Piper’s existence.
In the latest edition of ‘Emergence’, we learn that Emily is the one who has been after Piper throughout, while her biological father Kindred was only trying to protect his daughter by not turning her in. She’s adamant about having Piper back in her life by any means.
As Alan is the original creator of the AI who could make her do anything, Emily resorts to keeping him and his wife captive, until he agrees to re-program Piper. And all she wants is for the AI to love and treat her as her mother, which is only getting harder with Piper constantly evolving and developing a brain of her own.
Until Jo kept Piper’s identity hidden, the family’s loyalty towards her was tested. However, in the recent episode, we see that Jo’s family has finally come to terms with Piper for who she is, and even fights to protect her.
In an attempt to put an end to Emily’s wrongdoings, Jo visits Alan’s lab in an undisclosed location and destroys his computers and all the other programs used to manipulate Piper. But knowing how unshakeable Emily has been with respect to having an AI of a daughter, it looks like it's going to take way more than just Jo’s determination and Piper’s loyalty towards her newfound family to stop her.
