With one episode remaining, ABC’s thriller ‘Emergence’ has given rise to numerous speculations about its ending.

Jo Evans (Allison Tolman) is fighting an uphill battle against evil forces to save Piper (Alexa Swinton), while the latter is busy working her own set of plans. Throughout the series, we saw ourselves juggle between the good and bad, as ‘Emergence’ retained strongly its mystery factor for a long time.

Episode 12 ‘Killshot Pt. 1’ presented yet another suspicious character by introducing us to Lorreta (Rowena King), who claims to be Helen’s creator. She also reveals that she was the one who saved Agent Ryan Brooks (Enver Gjokaj)  after he was left unconsciousness from the Splinter’s attack.

However, we can’t help but wonder about Brooks, who comes across as too good to be trusted. Jo has laid her trust in him blindly, for obvious reasons. Despite having faced betrayal once by Benny Gallagher (Owain Yeoman), she conveniently agrees to join hands with the FBI agent for her investigation, which is not only highly confidential but has also caused unimaginable damage to the ones involved in it.

But, neither Jo nor we know much about Brooks besides the fact that he worked for the FBI.

For now, we know that there are thousands of AI living among humans, collecting data in various forms, which according to Benny will be used by Helen to activate the ultimate weapon, which needs to be stopped at any cost.

How sure are we Brooks isn’t one of them? Even when he comes face-to-face with Helen, who is on a killing spree, manages to escape with only an injured shoulder. Why did Helen spare him?

Although Jo convinces herself that Brooks is a human, by placing Piper’s chip on his wrist, that alone wouldn’t prove his actual identity, as Emily’s code used to create the AIs isn’t the same as Helen’s. Therefore, it leaves us with another possibility of Brooks revealing himself to be an AI in ‘Killshot Pt. 2’.

Or, it could also be that Helen is using him as a bait to lure Jo into her trap. For someone smart enough to break into a defense unit, it wouldn’t have been a task to learn about Jo’s love interest, which also serves as her weakness now.

Episode 12 ‘Killshot Pt. 2’ of ‘Emergence’ airs January 28 on ABC.
