Maybe, Piper refused to go with Jo because she was well-aware of Benny’s situation? Or maybe she has finally realized her purpose of existence.

‘Emergence’ is running high on mystery, no doubt. But, being a character-driven show, ABC’s thriller has rather intrigued us for other reasons. For one, we just can’t stop thinking about the little AI, Piper (Alexa Swinton), around whom the series revolves.

All along, we empathized with Piper as she came across as more of a human than a robot. We believed she belonged with Jo’s (Allison Tolman) family, intentionally or unintentionally overlooking the fact that it was highly impractical and also to a large extent, impossible.

However, just before its short winter hiatus, Episode 9 of ‘Emergence’ ended with a major cliffhanger, making us wonder where Piper actually belonged. And, the last episode, ‘15 years’, showcased Piper as a character of difference, further adding to our altered opinion about her existence and intentions.

Piper has now become one with the entities of her kind, and she even expressed her desire to continue to remain with them, despite Jo putting her motherly instincts on the full display, hoping it would convince her.

But Piper summarily dismisses Jo, saying she needs to help her fellow AIs and that she and Mia have nothing to worry about.

However, in Episode 11, Jo’s efforts to pursue Piper continues, as she and Agent Brooks draft a plan to communicate with the AI.

Behold! Jo has no idea about Piper’s true intentions with her fellow AI Benny. According to Episode 11 ‘Applied Sciences’ preview, Piper has taken the responsibility on herself to save Benny from Helen’s mission.

Piper’s action may not come across as surprising, because one, we have all witnessed Helen’s villainous side. And, we have also seen how Piper has always been able to humanely distinguish between good and bad, going against the laws of her creation.

Therefore, watching her fight against Helen to save Benny will only help us dwell deeper into AI’s goodwill. But, we are also excited to watch little Piper use her superpowers yet again, to save someone dear to her.

Maybe, she refused to go with Jo because she was well-aware of Benny’s situation? Or, maybe she has finally realized her purpose of existence, after juggling between human and non-human emotions for a fair amount of time?

The upcoming episode also promises to shed more light on Benny, whose major revelation played pivotal in re-defining the series.

Episode 11 of ‘Emergence’ airs on January 15 on ABC.
