Trump slammed for saying he is glad Kim Jong-un is back and well: 'You just LOVE people who kill Americans'

Social media users reprimanded the president for forgetting that North Korea imprisoned American medical student Otto Warmbier for a year before releasing him in a vegetative state in June 2017

President Donald Trump received a lot of backlash on Twitter after saying that he was "glad" to see North Korean leader Kim Jong-un make an appearance after 20 days of being a no-show in public, sparking rumors that he was either gravely ill or dead.

"I, for one, am glad to see he is back, and well!" Trump wrote on May 3, while retweeting pictures of the North Korean dictator's much-anticipated appearance, posted by a political research analyst.

"#KimJongUn cut the tape at the ceremony marking the completion of Sunchon Phosphatic Fertilizer Factory in Sunchon. #NorthKorea" the tweet said.

Soon enough, a number of people slammed the POTUS for his tone-deaf tweet. One of them was House Representative Joseph Kennedy III (D-MA) who tweeted: “I shouldn’t have to say this but, no president should ever praise a dictator on Twitter."

Another social media user reprimanded the president for forgetting the fact that Kim was the one who imprisoned American medical student Otto Warmbier for a year before releasing him in a vegetative state in June 2017, which caused him to die shortly after. "@POTUS probably doesn't even remember who the Warmbiers are. It's all about HIM all the time. The WORST most INCOMPETENT and CORRUPT president in the history of the United States of America!" the user wrote.

Another user said: "Of course you're happy a brutal dictator who murders his own citizens is back."

A third commented: "Why are you praising evil dictators? I am old enough to remember when the right was triggered when Obama showed respect bowing to Muslim leaders out of religious courtesy. Where's the same outrage?"

A fourth took a shot at how United States has beaten all other countries in the number of coronavirus deaths because of how poorly Trump had handled the crisis. "You just LOVE people who kill Americans. YOU have him beat though. You have killed almost 68,000 Americans. No wonder you and kimmy are in love," the user wrote.

Sunday's tweet was the first time that Trump officially acknowledged the speculation around Kim's health. Till that point, he had deliberately avoided giving a straight answer when he was asked about the rumors surrounding North Korean leader's failing health at press briefings.

When Trump was asked last month about Kim's deteriorating condition, he said, "I think the report was incorrect, let me just put it that way. I hear the report was an incorrect report. I hope it was an incorrect report," without providing further details.

Then, on Friday, May 1, when he was asked about Kim's health update, Trump said, “Kim Jong Un? I can’t tell you exactly. Yes, I do have a very good idea, but I can’t talk about it now. I just wish him well.”

The North Korea supremo shut down rumors of him being gravely ill or dead by appearing at the fertilizer plant, alongside his sister Kim Yo-jong, who was being pegged as his successor in numerous reports speculating about Kim's death..

When he failed to make an appearance for the country's most important holiday which honors the founder of the nation, Kim II Sung, on April 15, rumors started flying over Kim's worsening health conditions. Meanwhile, the hashtag 'KimJongUnDead' started trending on Twitter without any proof of the leader passing away.

A veterans-run news website in the US, We Are The Mighty, reported that a senior executive of a Beijing-backed satellite TV station in China has said that Kim is dead. Kim also ended up missing the 88th anniversary of their armed forces, the Korean People's Revolutionary Army, on April 25.

Last week, China reportedly sent medical experts to North Korea to check on the leader's health.
