President Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr, mocked former President Barack Obama on Sunday in an Instagram post alongside Texas Senator Ted Cruz. The duo, in the post, posed with a giant cookie cake which featured a picture of Obama.

Trump Jr, in his post, said the cookie was given to him as an early birthday present.

“With friends like these... some good friends decided that while my birthday is not for two weeks that they would get me an early 40th birthday cake. And what birthday is complete without an Obama cake?” Trump Jr wrote in the Instagram post.

"I figured it was so good that I would have to share it with Ted," Trump Jr added.

While Trump's eldest son appears giving a skewed grimace holding the cookie — presumably showing his distaste for the former Democratic president — Cruz appears his usual self, showing little emotion and smiling into the camera.

Several people commented on the particular Instagram post, saying that the duo was "irrationally obsessed with Obama" and asked them to "grow up" while, many pointed out that the food on display in the picture was a cookie and not a cake, as described by Trump Jr.

Trump's eldest son has garnered some rebuke in online circles recently over his social media post. The businessman, in October, had joked about taking his daughter's candy to "teach her about socialism."

Trump Jr had posted a picture on Instagram on Halloween night saying that he was going to “take half of Chloe’s candy tonight & give it to some kid who sat at home. It’s never to [sic] early to teach her about socialism.”

His post had prompted many social media users to point out that using a holiday where strangers gave away candies out of kindness rather than for money might not be the best way to teach his children a lesson in favor of capitalism.

The businessman, in October, had also slammed Hillary Clinton — who ran against his father in last year's presidential election — as entitled and arrogant in a birthday tweet.

“A year later the arrogance and entitlement in this tweet is exactly why it was never going to happen,” Trump Jr. said. He then added a picture of Clinton's tweet she had posted a year ago showing her as a young girl with caption: “Happy birthday to this future president."

Trump Jr was recently in the news as the probe into Russian interference in 2016 US election showed that he had met with a Kremlin associated lawyer in hopes of retrieving some damaging information about Clinton.

Trump Jr reportedly responded to the Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya's emails saying: “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer,” in hopes to find some dirt on the Clinton campaign.

An active Congress investigation into the case is ongoing to determine whether Donald Trump's campaign collided with Russia to influence a Trump win in the election.
