Donald Trump Jr. took to Twitter to mock Richard Pilger, who was director of the Election Crimes Branch of the Department of Justice just hours after Attorney General William Barr issued a memo to federal prosecutors to investigate “specific allegations” of voter fraud which were first raised by President Donald Trump after he lost the 2020 election.

"Wait. Seriously? Isn’t this the guy who was involved with the IRS and Lois Lerner in targeting conservatives and the Tea Party? Maybe that’s why he hasn’t done shit at DOJ. #deepstate Head of DOJ election crimes unit RESIGNS in protest at Bill Barr," the POTUS' eldest son tweeted.

The comments section of the tweet was filled with Trump supporters who added to the mockery initiated by Trump Jr. "Yes that’s exactly who that is and it doesn’t surprise me at all!" one user noted while another said, "All is well in the watchtower!" A third commented, "Once the bank robber is in the getaway car its too late to jump ship." The next added, "Doing a runner before he's caught out..." Another one said, "Rock on AG Bill Barr!"

As the president continued to refuse to concede the race and threaten legal battles to counter his baseless claims of widespread voter fraud across multiple voter fraud even days after the race was called in favor of President-elect Joe Biden, Pilger sent a memo to colleagues that suggested his resignation was linked to Barr’s memo, which backed the POTUS' allegations.

“Having familiarized myself with the new policy and its ramifications, and in accord with the best tradition of the John C. Keeney Award for Exceptional Integrity and Professionalism (my most cherished Departmental recognition), I must regretfully resign from my role as Director of the Election Crimes Branch,” Pilger’s letter said, according to a copy obtained by NBC News. “I have enjoyed very much working with you for over a decade to aggressively and diligently enforce federal criminal election law, policy, and practice without partisan fear or favor. I thank you for your support in that effort.”

On Monday, November 9, Barr issued a memo that authorized prosecutors "to pursue substantial allegations of voting and vote tabulation irregularities prior to the certification of elections." The memo contradicted an initial stance taken by the DOJ which had advised prosecutors that "overt investigative steps ordinarily should not be taken until the election in question has been concluded, its results certified, and all recounts and election contests concluded." Barr declared that the guidance was outdated after coming under fire by right-wing media for not bolstering the president's claims of election fraud. "Such a passive and delayed enforcement approach can result in situations in which election misconduct cannot realistically be rectified," Barr said in the memo.

A DOJ official told NBC News the memo itself did not allege that there were any irregularities per se in the election. It merely authorized local attorneys to investigate if they learn “clear and apparently-credible allegations of irregularities that, if true, could potentially impact the outcome of a federal election in an individual State.” It added, "While serious allegations should be handled with great care, specious, speculative, fanciful or far-fetched claims should not be a basis for initiating federal inquiries. Nothing here should be taken as an indication that the Department has concluded that voting irregularities have impacted the outcome of any election."
