'Doc Martin' Season 10: Release date, plot, cast, trailer and all you need to know about Martin Clunes' hit dramedy
It looks like Doc Martin is soon going to retire. The grumpy British surgeon-turned-GP we had all come to love and admire, is soon going to shut his surgery down for good. According to the latest reports, Season 10 is set to be the final season for the UK comedy-drama series. 'Doc Martin' has been on air since 2004 and after a pleasant (and also sometimes overwhelming) run of almost 16 years now, the show will be bidding its final farewell.
Here's everything we know about the upcoming season 10 of 'Doc Martin'.
Release date
The official release date for Season 10 of 'Doc Martin' isn't announced yet. MEA WorldWide (MEAWW) will update this article when it is. ITV, the home channel for the show, has said that production is set to start in 2021. The show airs on Acorn TV in the US.
Plot
'Doc Martin' follows Martin Clunes in the titular role, Dr Martin Ellingham, a GP with a brusque bedside manner and a phobia of blood. When he first arrived in the idyllic small village of Portwenn in Cornwall, he had brushed off many people the wrong way. But over the course of the last nine seasons, he had built a home of the surgery and even found love.
While official details of the final season aren't announced yet, it is likely to focus on his relationship with his wife and son. Season 10 will also shed light on the incomplete stories of the rest of the supporting cast of the show as well.
Cast
Martin Clunes as Doc Martin
Clunes stars as the titular Dr Martin Ellingham. While his mannerisms and behavior might come across as blunt at first, the Doc really cares about his patients and those who take ill under his watch. Over the course of the last nine seasons, he has made several friends in the village and also found love in Louisa.
The actor hardly requires any introduction. Long before he became the popular GP, the actor gained international recognition with his role of Gary Strang in the very well-known 'Men Behaving Badly'. He is also known for his work on 'Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie', 'The Man Who Lost His Head', 'Arthur & George', 'Manhunt', 'Warren' and 'Vanity Fair'.
Caroline Catz as Louisa
Catz plays Doc Martin's wife, Louisa Ellingham (nee Glasson). The actress is known for playing Detective Inspector Kate Ashurst in 'Murder in Suburbia', Detective Inspector Helen Morton in 'DCI Banks' and PC Cheryl Hutchins in 'The Vice'.
Apart from Clunes and Catz, 'Doc Martin' boasts of a massive star cast that includes Dame Eileen Atkins, who plays Doc Martin's formidable Aunt Ruth; Ian McNeice portrays the local businessman Bert Large whose business instincts deny him to ever let go of a good opportunity, with Joe Absolom as his son, Al John Marquez stars in the role of PC Joe Penhale, Jessica Ransom as Morwenna Newcross, the doctor's receptionist, who had tied the knot with Al in Season 9 and Selina Cadell stars as pharmacist Mrs Tishell.
Creators
'Doc Martin' is created by Dominic Minghella, written by Philippa Braithwaite and directed by Nigel Cole. It is produced by Buffalo Pictures and executive produced by Mark Crowdy.
Talking about Season 10, Clunes and his wife, producer Philippa Braithwaite, said: "We have loved making nine series of Doc Martin. When we launched the series in 2004, we could never have imagined how much our loyal viewers would take to the grumpy Doc like they have. The series has avid fans both in the UK and throughout the world and we are thrilled that Doc Martin has topped the ratings every time. However, after sixteen years we now feel that the time has come to say goodbye to Portwenn. We will be making the tenth and final series in 2021 and we are very much looking forward to returning to Cornwall to film it."
ITV's Head of Drama Polly Hill added, "I just want to thank Martin and Philippa and everyone involved in Doc Martin because it's a brilliant, beautifully made series that has delighted audiences for many years. I am pleased that we are making Series 10, and sad this will be the last, but respect their decision to bring it to a close."
