'God has got you': Did Cory Booker just make one of the greatest speeches ever? Internet thinks so
The Senate confirmation hearing of Supreme Court nominee Ketanji Brown Jackson on Wednesday, March 23, took an emotional turn as Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) gave his touching testimony on racial progression. He also showed immense support to Jackson and declared his gratitude towards her nomination to the Supreme Court.
Booker said, “It’s hard for me not to look at you and not see my mom. Not to see my cousins, one of them who had to come here and sit behind you. She had to have your back. I see my ancestors and yours. But don’t worry, my sister. Don’t worry. God has got you. And how do I know that? You’re here, and I know what it’s taken for you to sit in that seat.”

The 52-year-old attorney also noted: “You have earned this spot. You are worthy. You are a great American.” In his speech, he mentioned abolitionist Harriet Tubman and said, “I thought about her. And how she looked up, she kept looking up no matter what they did to her she never stopped looking up. And that star was a harbinger of hope. Today, you’re my star. You are my harbinger of hope. This country’s getting better and better and better. And when that final vote happens, and you ascend on to the highest court in the land, I’m going to rejoice.”
Booker, the only Black member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, also used his time to condemn the attacks made against Jackson’s past sentencing decisions. He stated: “This is a new low,” while calling the accusations “meritless to the point of demagoguery”. He then remarked: “The way you have dealt with some of these things, that’s why you are a judge and I am a politician. You have sat with grit and grace and have shown us just an extraordinary demeanor.”
Booker also added that he wants to tell her “when I look at you this is why I get emotional. You’re so much more than your race and gender. You’re a Christian, you’re a mom. Your intellect.” His moving speech brought tears to Jackson’s eyes who was seen grabbing a tissue and wiping tears streaming down her cheeks.
Meanwhile, people on the internet praised Booker’s speech as a user tweeted, “That was fabulous. He is fabulous. Treated a black woman with respect, unlike the men and women of the @GOP.” The second one wrote: “Senator Booker provided a deeply touching and perfect moment that many Americans needed after a (repeated) sad show of inappropriate and immature behavior today. KBJ is awesome and Booker rocks!” The third user added: “Loud and proud- thank you Senator Booker for acknowledging this amazing, bright, and beautiful woman…. Our future Supreme Court Justice!!”
