When the German-American espionage thriller franchise 'Deutschland' returned for its third and final instalment 'Deutschland 89', it put our favourite superspy Martin Rauch. What, James Bond, you say? You might want to check Martin in action. A spy for East Germany during Berlin Fall, he is sent into the West. Every operation thrust upon him is completed to perfection. Or is it? In this final season, Martin has been away from Secret Service for a while living with his son Max (Ari Kurecki). As he finds himself at the crossroads of a silent, peaceful revolution around him, Martin is pushed back into the world he wanted to escape.

It is revealed that the HVA is up till their necks in trouble, and with that, with that the superspy Martin is being recruited by several agencies. While he managed to refuse all these, he is looped in by Brigitte Winkelmann (Lavinia Wilson) to work with the CIA. Back with Brigitte, some old wounds are bound to open as their affair was cut short. Back at the HVA, Walter Schweppenstette (Sylvester Groth) is sent on a new assignment. And elsewhere, Lenora Rauch (Maria Schrader), Martin's beloved aunt, manages to escape prison.

But the synopsis of the upcoming episode remain cryptic of any the above events. According to the official synopsis of Episode 3 titled 'Magic', "When the terrorists put Martin to a radical test, he has to face his past." While that doesn't hint to a lot of speculation, we are eager to see what happens with his "partner in crime", Nicole Zangen (Svenja Jung), Max's teacher.

Since the Sundance TV airing happens two episodes at a time, the synopses for Episode 4 also offer some insight into what happens after 'Magic'. In Episode 4 titled 'Operation Condor', "Martin comes to in Frankfurt, in the middle of the preparations for a major terrorist attack. He desperately tries to prevent the bomb from going off." That doesn't sound like an easy ride for the German superspy. Martin is no stranger to living on the edge - in fact, he quite literally nests there. So preventing a bomb from going off - not so difficult. Neither is it the first time. 'Deutschland 83' vibes, anyone?

Episode 3 'Deutschland 89' will air on Thursday, November 5, at 11 pm ET/10c on Sundance TV. Episode 4 will follow.
