'Descendants' (2015) premiered successfully in the U.S. garnering almost 9 million viewers on its opening night. Following the positive reception, the musical fantasy TV film came up with a sequel two years later and was simulcast on Disney-owned networks ABC, Disney XD, Freeform, Lifetime and Lifetime Movies.

Come 2019, Disney will roll out the third installment marking yet another adventure for the teen children of Maleficent, the Evil Queen, Jafar, and Cruella de Vil, the classic Disney villains. Here's what we know about 'Descendants 3' so far.

Release date:

'Descendants 3' is set to premiere on the Disney Channel on August 2.

Plot:

Jackson will be the series newcomer and will play Hades, a baddie. (IMDb)

After an epic battle between Mal (Dove Cameron)  and Uma (China Anne McClain), the second part of the film ended with Mal reuniting with Ben (Mitchell Hope). The official synopsis teases that the teens will face their "most epic battle yet".

The synopsis reads: "When a barrier breach jeopardizes the safety of Auradon during their departure off the Isle, Mal resolves to permanently close the barrier, fearing that nemeses Uma (China Anne McClain) and Hades (Cheyenne Jackson) will wreak vengeance on the kingdom. Despite her decision, an unfathomable dark force threatens the people of Auradon, and it's up to Mal and the teens to save everyone in their most epic battle yet."

Cast:

Dove Cameron returns as Mal, Maleficent's daughter. Cameron was last seen in 'Descendants 2' and 'Hairspray Live!' a TV movie in 2016.  Cameron Boyce, set to appear in the upcoming drama 'Mrs. Fletcher', Sofia Carson ('Adventures in Baby Sitting'), Booboo Stewart ('Twilight Saga')  and Mitchell Hope ('Let It Snow') reprise their roles as Carlos, Evie, Jay, and Ben respectively.

China Anne McClain will be back as Uma (Ursula's daughter) and Brenna D'Amico as Jane, daughter of the Fairy Godmother. According to Digital Spy, Christian Convery ('Venom') and Luke Roessler ('Legion') are on board as Squeaky and Squirmy, the sons of Peter Pan's Mr. Smee. Cheyenne Jackson ('American Horror Story') is roped in as Hades.

Writer/Director:

Josann McGibbon ('Three Men and a Little Lady' and 'Runaway Bride') and Sara Parriott have written the screenplay for the third installment while Kenny Ortega ('High School Musical 3: Senior Year') returns to direct after helming the 'Descendants 1 and 2'.

Trailer:

The trailer shows a new threat the teens weren't prepared for. They will have to deal with the likes of Hades, played by series newcomer Cheyenne Jackson. The trailer also hints that Mal (Dove Cameron) may lose her powers at some point and if that is the case, then the teens have quite a challenge on their hands.

News:

'Under the Seas: A Descendants Short Story,' a movie-related short film featuring Mal and Uma in an underwater showdown, was released last September.
