'Stargirl': New designs for Wildcat's costume give fans a detailed look at Yvette Monreal's potential attire
While we have gotten many a look at Stargirl's (Brec Bassinger) costume, we've only been given a tease of the other characters' looks on the 'Stargirl' promotional poster. Earlier today, however, costume concept artist Gina DeDomenico Flanagan and specialty costume designer Laura Jean Shannon shared the most detailed look at the 'Wildcat' costume we've had yet.
The costume shows a younger, female Wildcat, and not the older version from the original Justice Society, who is played by Brian Stapf. This costume has, according to Gina DeDomenico Flanagan, a lot of "seaming that makes this suit dynamic." Laura Jean Shannon showed off the costume in more detail, as well as giving fans some insight into how fabric planning is done for a costume, showing off the fabric map for the costume as well as the different kinds of fabrics that would be required.
DeDomenico is quite aware of just how much work it took to create Wildcat's costume, writing "With all the seaming that makes this suit dynamic, it’s a miracle Agnes is still speaking to me after receiving the concept art to be sewn!" referring to Agnes Grzybowski, the costume manufacturing foreperson for 'Stargirl. Laura Jean Shannon explains to the fans exactly how the costume team plans things out from a concept art image, including this with the post: "How do you plan out all the fabrics? Well, the concept artists will often use maps like this to communicate fabric placement to the whole team. Pretty awesome right?"
In the comics, the original Wildcat was Ted Grant, widely known as one of the world's greatest hand-to-hand fighters, having trained fighters like Batman and Black Canary. His god-daughter, Yolanda Martez, is granted powers after her mother received experimental drugs while pregnant, and Yolanda took up her godfather's legacy after and injury left him too weak to fight.
Wildcat has yet to appear anywhere but the promotional poster, but given that 'Stargirl' is all about the next generation of superheroes, it's a safe bet to say she's going to be a part of the new Justice Society that rises to accept the legacy of the old.
'Stargirl' premieres May 18, on DC Universe.
