With the death toll in china rising to 41 on Saturday, January 25, from 26 a day earlier, there is no time to waste. And reportedly, medical staff on the frontline of China's coronavirus outbreak are wearing adult diapers as they do not even have the time to go to the toilet.

More than 1,300 people have been infected globally with the virus traced to a seafood market in the central city of Wuhan that was illegally selling wildlife.

At Wuhan, the center of the epidemic, healthcare workers have been on their feet struggling with the increasing urgency of the outbreak. The situation in the city's hospitals is abysmal with videos depicting crowded hospitals, patients slumped on the floor and screaming staff.

Medical professionals in the city's hospitals are wearing hazmat suits in order to safeguard themselves from the virus. However, since the suit comes in the way, they are wearing diapers so as to not remove the cumbersome suits.

"We know that the protective suit we wear could be the last one we have, and we can't afford to waste anything," a Wuhan Union Hospital doctor identified only as Mr Do wrote on Weibo.

The news comes just as Australia confirmed its first four cases on Saturday, Malaysia confirmed three cases and France reported Europe's first cases on January 24. Health authorities around the world are desperate to prevent a pandemic.

On Saturday, Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam declared a virus emergency in the Asian financial hub, with five confirmed cases, immediately putting a hold on official visits to mainland China and canceling official Lunar New Year celebrations.

Flights and trains to and fro between Hong Kong and Wuhan as well as schools are to be shut until February 2020. They also treated 122 people suspected of having the disease.

Deputy director-general of the Civil Affairs Department in Hubei province, where Wuhan is located, Hu Yinghai, made an appeal on Saturday for masks and protective suits. Hospitals have also made similar appeals.

"We are steadily pushing forward the disease control and prevention... But right now we are facing an extremely severe public health crisis," he told a news briefing.
