A British woman is mourning the loss of her mother, who she said "died alone" after being quarantined when she tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Caroline Hopton said the COVID-19 diagnosis meant she did not get to hold her mother's hand during her final moments on earth. Hopton posted an emotional tribute on Twitter alongside a smiling photo of her mom.

"Covid-19 stopped me holding my dearest mum’s hand in her final moments last night," she wrote. "She died alone in isolation after being admitted early Sat. AM and was put in isolation ‘just in case’. It made losing her even more devastating. How many other families will go through same?"

The post was retweeted more than a thousand times, with many expressing their condolences in the comments.

"So sad — I can’t imagine what this must feel like," one user wrote. "However I know what it’s like to lose a parent when far away, take comfort in knowing that she loved you, and you loved her and distance is nothing when it comes to love."

"Heartfelt condolences on your tragic loss," another tweeted. "We've not seen the end of this malady that will affect millions globally."

The COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to worsen in the UK, which saw the number of cases rise to 1,395 and the death toll almost double in just one night.

The government will likely ask those above the age of 70 to stay at home for as many as four months as it steps up its fight against the outbreak. It will be part of a wider package of emergency powers that include banning mass gatherings, allowing police to detain suspected virus victims, and controversially forcing schools to stay open.

Hopton, however, is not the only one who has had to experience the pain of losing a loved one without getting the chance to say goodbye.

Severa Belotti, 82, and Luigi Carrara, 86, had been together for 60 years before tragically passing away alone within just two hours of each other after they were infected with the coronavirus.

They spent their last days on lockdown in their home of Albino, in the northern Italian province of Bergamo, one of the worst affected regions in the country, without any medical assistance.

"They died alone, that's how this virus works," said their son, Luca Carrara. "our loved ones are left alone and you can't even say goodbye, hug them, try to give them some comfort. (You can't even tell them) a good lie like 'everything will be fine.'"
